Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon

Jökulsárlón is one of those places that feels jarring, its so different to anything else I've seen. I visited early in the morning, and I’m so glad I did. That’s when the ice still lingers on Diamond Beach, scattered across the black sand. By afternoon, most of it melts or washes away, so you’re left chasing tiny bits of ice scattered on the beach. Watching the ice drift slowly from the lagoon into the Atlantic is moving, the speed and power is deeply impressive, and where it meets the sea it forms a whirlpool, spinning the icebergs round in circles. The boat ride across the glacial lagoon was unforgettable. We cruised through floating icebergs, some the size of houses, some glowing blue. Then we got close to the glacier itself—this immense, jagged wall of ice, like the edge of another planet. There’s a strange stillness out there. Everything feels slowed down, hushed. The magic of Jökulsárlón isn’t just in the views—it’s in how small and fleeting it makes everything else feel. The ice doesn’t roar like volcanoes. It just... melts.
