A Playful Dim Sum Experience at Yum Cha

#favouriteitinerary #travelanywhere While in Hong Kong, our local friends introduced us to Yum Cha in Central (Nan Fung Place), a dim sum spot that leans more toward creativity than tradition. Located less than ten minutes from Sheung Wan MTR, it was a convenient and stylish venue—perfect for special occasions, a charming date, or impressing friends from overseas with something a little different. From the moment we glanced at the menu, it was clear that this wasn’t your typical dim sum house. Instead of strictly classic offerings, we found an array of modern, whimsical creations, including dim sum buns shaped like adorable characters. The menu even featured unexpected dishes like Singaporean noodles and pineapple fried rice, both of which we eagerly ordered out of curiosity. While the experience wasn’t the most traditional, it was undeniably fun and well-executed. The undeniable star of the meal was the hot custard molten bun, cleverly designed as a wide-eyed yellow character. The true magic happened when we gently poked a chopstick below its eyes, creating a mouth from which molten salted egg yolk custard dramatically oozed out. It was as entertaining as it was delicious, making it one of the most memorable bites of the day. We also indulged in the BBQ piggy buns, which housed sweet and smoky char siu filling within soft, pillowy dough. Seasonal character buns added an element of surprise, while the classic siew mai was given a modern upgrade, both in presentation and texture. Beyond the playful aesthetics, the craftsmanship behind each dish was evident. Every item was handmade fresh in-house, and through the glass kitchen panel, we could see the chefs meticulously shaping each dim sum piece with precision and care. Yum Cha may not be the place for those seeking an entirely authentic, old-school dim sum experience, but for those who appreciate a creative twist on tradition, it delivers both in flavor and presentation. With its imaginative menu, quality execution, and charming ambiance, it offers a dim sum experience that is as delightful to look at as it is to eat. #travel #chinatrip #localfood #myitinerary #afternoonteatime
