"Devil's Mountain" sounds like an adventure place in fairy tales, but I never thought that there is a mountain called Devil's Mountain in reality! The official name of Devil's Hill is Fortress Hill, located between Yau Tong and Tiu Keng Leng, with an altitude of 222 meters! Devil's Hill is a place full of historical traces. There you can find abandoned forts and dilapidated bunkers. You can feel the history of Hong Kong while hiking! It is said that more than a hundred years ago, Devil's Mountain was called "Chicken Mountain". At that time, the area was occupied by pirates who often robbed merchant ships. It is said that the title "Devil" was used to describe the pirates at that time. Over time, the mountain was named "Devil's Mountain"! Later, Devil's Hill became a government military base, so the official name was changed from "Chicken Hill" to "Paotai Hill"! Devil's Hill has important strategic value. It controls the entrance to the eastern waterway of Victoria Harbour and has a distant view of the eastern part of Hong Kong Island. Therefore, in 1898, after the British leased the New Territories, they turned Devil's Hill into a military stronghold and built a series of defense facilities. The Devil's Hill Battery consists of the Devil's Hill Fort, Gough Battery and Pottinger Battery. The Devil's Hill military facilities have now been listed as a Grade II historical building! Transportation to Devil's Mountain: This time, the Devil's Hill hiking route will depart directly from Exit A1 of Yau Tong MTR Station, so there is no need to take other means of transportation! Note: Although the official name of Devil's Hill is Fortress Hill, the location is not at Fortress Hill Station! Summary of walking route: Yau Tong Station > Devil's Hill Fort > Gough Fort > Yau Tong Station (return along the original route) If you don’t want to go hiking too early like me, you might as well choose a short and easy route. This route is very suitable for night owls who want to hike but don’t want to walk a lot or for a long time! Small thoughts: The road from Yau Tong to Devil's Hill is very easy and relaxing. Not only can you see the urban scenery of Yau Tong, Tseung Kwan O, the eastern part of Hong Kong Island and the Kowloon Peninsula, but also military relics such as the Gough Battery and Devil's Hill Fort. You can also watch the sunset! This time I preferred to visit historical sites rather than hike. If I had known, I would have set off earlier and included Pottinger Fort and Mao Wu Tsai Fort in the itinerary!
