The Historic City of Guanajuato

Guanajuato is the capital of Guanajuato State in central Mexico, located approximately 370 kilometers northwest of Mexico City, with an average elevation of about 1,996 meters. Renowned for its rich colonial history, vibrant colorful architecture, and unique cultural atmosphere, the city was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. Founded in 1554, Guanajuato was once one of the world's largest silver mining centers during the 16th century, with Spanish colonial mining activities bringing prosperity to the city. Built along the mountains, its winding streets are lined with numerous Baroque and Neoclassical-style buildings painted in a kaleidoscope of colors, earning it the nickname "the spilled paint palette." The city served as one of the inspirations for the Land of the Dead in the animated film "Coco."
