The medieval town of Gruyères in Switzerland

Gruyères is a small town in the canton of Fribourg in western Switzerland, with a total area of ​​only 28.4 square kilometers and an altitude of 810 meters. This medieval town is an important tourist destination in the upper valley of the Saone River. It produces the best cheese in Switzerland named after Gruyère, and its cheese products have become a must-have on tourists' tables. The history of Gruyères dates back to the Hallstatt period (12th-8th centuries BC) and the La Téné period (325-250 BC). This is confirmed by graves to the north of the castle of Gruyères and other traces of the Bronze Age. In addition, the remains of a Roman villa from the 2nd to 3rd century AD and an early medieval cemetery were discovered nearby. On June 22, 1476, Gruyère took part in the Battle of Morat against Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy. With the help of the Old Swiss Confederacy, they defeated the Burgundian army and captured three cloaks of the Order of the Golden Fleece that had belonged to Charles the Bold, including one bearing the coat of arms of his father Philip. Interestingly, the fight happened just as Charles was celebrating the anniversary of his father's death.
