The Rome of Hungary

#myhiddengems Amongst the world's oldest wine regions, the city of Eger is often considered as a the rome of Hungary. I have had 3 occasions where I visited Eger, coupled with different places each time. It continues to be amongst the best of picks in this fascinating country. Blessed with a rich culture and some brilliant cellars. Eger has variety of offerings, all put together compactly. Some of my favourite experiences include the archbishop library which by the ways had a great collection of paintings, sweeping halls display many beautiful ecclesiastical objects such as jewel-encrusted chalices and ceremonial robes, and there are lots of period furniture from the late Baroque and Biedermeier periods. The archbishop's private chapel is also predictably grand. Across the main church, the catholic university building itself offers a specular example of eger's rich architecture. There is an 18th century observatory with an astronomical museum on the upper level. It's a refreshing mix to the sightseeing catalogue. The castle of eger cannot be missed. I followed it up with the cathedral basilica and just when you feel like you've seen enough for the day you may do what I did.
