🏛️ A Church of Royal and Civic Significance

#hellohalloween Canongate Kirk stands just steps from the Palace of Holyroodhouse, serving as the parish church for both the palace and Edinburgh Castle. Though modest in appearance, its history is rich with royal patronage and architectural symbolism. Queen Elizabeth II attended services here during her visits to Scotland, and her granddaughter Zara Phillips was married in the church in 2011 christian. The church was built after the congregation was displaced from Holyrood Abbey, which King James VII repurposed as a Catholic chapel. Funds for the new church came from a bequest by Thomas Moodie, a local merchant and Covenanter.
