Clumber Park – A Day of Tranquility and Heritage in Nottinghamshire

#cityplaybook I had a truly lovely day out at Clumber Park, a stunning National Trust estate nestled in the heart of Nottinghamshire. Spanning over 3,800 acres, this place is a peaceful escape filled with woodlands, open parkland, gardens, and history. Although the original mansion was demolished decades ago, you still feel the estate’s grandeur — especially when visiting the Chapel of St Mary the Virgin. It’s a gorgeous Gothic Revival building with incredible stained glass and intricate details, often called a “cathedral in miniature.” Standing there, surrounded by trees and silence, it was easy to imagine the past lives that once moved through these paths. The walled kitchen garden was another highlight — it’s one of the most impressive I’ve seen. From an enormous collection of rhubarb and heritage apples to beautifully maintained herbaceous borders, the garden feels timeless. Everything was in bloom during my visit, buzzing with bees and bursting with colour. Walking around the serpentine lake, with views of the historic Ornamental Bridge, was calming and scenic. I saw families cycling, couples having picnics, and solo walkers like me soaking up the peacefulness. Best time to visit: Spring through early summer is lovely for blossoms and greenery, but autumn is magical too with its golden trees and crisp air.
