Legend has it that a mysterious flame appeared atop Mt. Hinomine, where the shrine’s original sanctuary once stood, guiding ships to safety. This established its legacy as a protector of maritime travelers. In earlier times, volcanic smoke from the mountain also served as a natural beacon for seafarers. Today, the shrine is a place of prayer for safety when traveling, business success, family well-being, and life’s milestones, including baby blessings and protection from misfortune. On March 29, as the cherry blossoms reach full bloom, the Suzubiraki Festival comes alive with prayers for a bountiful harvest, a lively mikoshi (portable shrine) parade, and stunning cherry blossom illuminations.
