Wat Suan Dok: Pay respects to Phra Chao Kao Tue

Wat Suan Dok, also known as Wat Buppharam, is located west of Chiang Mai city on Suthep Road, near Chiang Mai University. This ancient temple was built during the reign of King Kue Na of the Mangrai dynasty in 1371 AD. Originally, the area was a royal flower garden, which inspired the name "Wat Suan Dok" (Temple of the Flower Garden). One of the highlights of Wat Suan Dok is its large Lanka-style chedi, a masterpiece of Lanna art, which houses the sacred relics of the Buddha brought by King Kue Na from Sukhothai. This chedi is considered one of Chiang Mai's most important relics. The temple also features a large ordination hall that enshrines Phra Chao Fon Saen Ha, a significant and beautifully crafted Lanna-style Buddha image, revered by the people of Chiang Mai. At the back of the temple lies the "Ku Chao Nai," a memorial site containing the ashes of several northern royal family members, making Wat Suan Dok both a center of faith and a place of historical remembrance. Beyond its religious and historical significance, Wat Suan Dok offers a tranquil atmosphere ideal for meditation and spiritual practice. The serene environment, with large trees and flower gardens, provides a calming retreat for visitors. Wat Suan Dok is a must-visit destination in Chiang Mai.
