The city is famous for its distinctive blue buildings, so it is affectionately called the "Blue City". It is located in the mountainous region of northern Morocco, between Tetouan and Ouazzane. It was founded in 1471 by Moulay Ali bin Rashid, a distant relative of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. Originally, this was just a small fortress, which is now the Kasbah of Chefchaouen. The fortress was built to protect the area from Portuguese invaders who were attacking cities and towns in northern Morocco at the time.
