Xihu Fishing Rafts: A Scenic Gem of Chaozhou

Xihu Fishing Rafts, one of Chaozhou's Eight Scenic Spots, is a core attraction among the outer eight scenic spots of Chaozhou. Located in the Xihu Scenic Area on the western outskirts of Chaozhou City, it is composed of Hulu Mountain and the Xihu Lake area. The site is renowned for its picturesque combination of lake and mountain scenery, as well as the traditional fishing raft activities. This scenic spot dates back to the Tang Dynasty when the lake was dredged to create a release pond for fish. It was later developed into a recreational lake during the Song Dynasty and officially recorded in local chronicles during the Qing Dynasty. Historical structures such as the Hong Bridge and Hanbi Pavilion still stand today. Key Features: A Blend of Nature and Culture The Xihu Lake area and Hulu Mountain complement each other beautifully, with pavilions, small bridges, and waterside pavilions scattered throughout. The site is enriched by a 400-year-old kapok tree and over 130 cliff inscriptions, adding a sense of historical depth. Qing Dynasty poet Zheng Lanzhi once wrote a poem titled "Xihu Fishing Rafts," vividly depicting the poetic scene of fishing rafts gliding through the scenic lake and mountain landscape. Free Admission and Visitor Experience The scenic area is open to the public free of charge from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Visitors can enjoy boating on the lake (pedal boats cost 50-70 RMB per half hour) or take a leisurely stroll along the lakeside to experience the "elegant simplicity of southern Chinese gardens." Hanbi Pavilion, a former site of the Nanchang Uprising Army, serves both as a revolutionary education site and a garden attraction.
