A Quiet Charm in the North: A Day in Changchun

Changchun, the capital of Jilin Province in northeast China, is a city full of quiet charm, wide streets, and rich history. Though not as famous as some southern cities, a day in Changchun offers a refreshing and authentic northern experience. I started my day at the Puppet Emperor’s Palace, the former residence of Puyi, the last emperor of China during his time as a puppet ruler under Japanese occupation. Walking through the old buildings and exhibitions gave me a deep sense of history and reflection. Next, I visited the Changchun World Sculpture Park, where modern art blends with natural scenery. Sculptures from all over the world are displayed among lakes, trees, and walking paths—making it both a cultural and relaxing experience. For lunch, I enjoyed local northeastern cuisine, including crispy pork, pickled vegetables, and warm dumplings that were perfect for the cooler weather. In the afternoon, I took a walk around Nanhu Park, where families were out boating, walking, and enjoying the peaceful lake view. The city felt calm, open, and friendly. Changchun may not be fast-paced or flashy, but its history, space, and gentle rhythm make it a lovely place to slow down and enjoy the moment.

20250820 Puppet Manchukuo Imperial Palace Museum From emperor to commoner, Puyi's eventful life. This place was more luxurious than I had imagined. The imprisoned emperor had his own piano room, billiard room, garden, air-raid shelter, horse racing stables, and countless meeting rooms, living in a miniature Western-style palace. The courtyard where Puyi's sister and her family lived was elegant and quiet, and was where Puyi hid his private funds. The natural colors of the ancient ruins are evident. Despite living in such a luxurious environment, he was under constant surveillance. Even as a commoner, he still couldn't escape the fate of being the target of widespread scrutiny. What a sad fate!
