Whether you're visiting on a day-trip or staying over the weekend, Canterbury is a little gem of a town which perhaps can be called 'the Venice of the UK' ❤️ Canterbury is a cathedral city and a UNESCO site by the Great Stour river with thousands and thousands years of history, incredible listed building showcasing traditional English medieval architecture and generally lots to do! The town was mainly made famous by Chaucer's Canterbury Tales though, for centuries, it has been where great stories where told. You can get to Canterbury from London St Pancras or Victoria within no more than an hour and a half. 👉TOP SPOTS TO EXPLORE IN CANTERBURY👈 1) Westgate Gardens These gardens are located at a short 8 minute walked from Canterbury West train station. Westgate Gardens is one of the oldest parks in England. It's also very scenic and the perfect place to start a day of sightseeing. 2) Westgate Towers After the gardens, head straight over to the well preserved medieval gatehouse that stands at the entrance to Canterbury’s high street. This epic tower dates back to the 14th century and is the largest surviving city gate in all of England. This impressive gatehouse is actually a replacement from the original Roman wall that circled the city around the year 300 AD. 3) The Old Weaver's House A classic timer-framed Tudor style house perfectly placed next to a canal. Its name comes from the Flemish weavers who fled France to escape religious persecution in the 16th century. It’s also home to a popular restaurant where you can dine on the patio outside next to the river - I'd advise to book a table in advance if you can! 4) Canterbury River Cruise After doing some research, but not booking any tickets in advance, I rocked up to a promo stall for Canterbury Punting Company (right across the Beaney House of Art and Knowledge), who secured me a spot for a ride approx. an hour and a half later. I was very lucky as these get super busy once the summer season fully hits. Anyway, I found this was the finest way to see and learn about Canterbury, from the comfort of a classic hand-built punt on the historic river Stour. The team were super friendly and helpful, and our guide was knowledgeable and funny! An adult ticket for a shared ride costs £20 while a student one is £17.50. 5) Crooked House of Canterbury A short walk from the high street will take you to the famous crooked house of Canterbury which is a must on your day trip itinerary! 6) Canterbury Cathedral Canterbury Cathedral is one of the oldest and most famous Christian structures in England.
