［Berlin］A line separates the east and the west

Checkpoint Charlie was the most famous border checkpoint between East Berlin and West Berlin during the Cold War. It is located at the junction of Friedrichstraße and Zimmerstraße in Berlin, Germany, in the Friedrichstadt district, close to the East Side Gallery and the Jewish Museum. Take subway line U6 to Kochstraße station or line U2 to Stadtmitte station and walk for about 5 minutes. It is about 20 minutes' walk from the Brandenburg Gate, which is suitable for inclusion in a trip to the center of Berlin. Checkpoint Charlie was established after the completion of the Berlin Wall in 1961. It was the third checkpoint named by the Allies (Alpha, Bravo, Charlie) and was used exclusively for Allied personnel, diplomats and foreign tourists to enter and exit East Berlin. In October 1961, American and Soviet tanks faced off here, becoming a symbol of the tensions of the Cold War. The current checkpoint is a replica rebuilt after 1990; the original checkpoint is now in the Allied Museum in Berlin-Zehlendorf. There were sandbags, American flags and soldier portraits on site to recreate the atmosphere of that year. Double rows of bricks are used on the streets to mark the former location of the Berlin Wall, reminding people of the historical dividing line. There is also the Wall Museum (Mauermuseum) next to the checkpoint, which displays the stories and tools (such as hot air balloons and modified cars) of East German escapees. The ticket price is about 17.5 euros and the opening hours are 9:00-22:00.
