Lisbon Travel: Monument to the Discoveries 🇵🇹

[Trip Moment Delivery.🗞️] On this trip, I visited the Padrão dos Descobrimentos (Monument to the Discoveries), which commemorates Portugal's Age of Exploration! 🇵🇹⛵✨ 🛄ㅣA Symbol of Great Navigation Encountered on the banks of the Tagus River As you walk along the expansive banks of the Tagus River (Rio Tejo) in Lisbon's Belém district, a massive stone sculpture catches your eye. This sail-shaped structure is the Padrão dos Descobrimentos (Monument to the Discoveries), built to commemorate the glory of Portugal's Age of Exploration (15th and 16th centuries), when it expanded its reach around the world. ⛵ Sculptures of Great Navigators The front of the monument features over 30 figures, including Infante Dom Henrique the Navigator, Vasco da Gama, Fernão de Magalhães, and Luís de Camões, among others, representing Portugal's greatest explorers, cartographers, and poets. They are all depicted as standing on the bow of a ship, creating the illusion of a procession of seafarers heading out to sea. 🌊 Harmony with the Tagus River Just in front of the monument, a massive mosaic of compass roses adorns the floor. Crafted from pink marble and black stone, the compass symbolizes global navigation routes and Portugal's voyages. Viewed from above, it resembles a beautiful work of art. The Tagus River stretches out behind, the blue sky, and the red silhouette of the 25th of April Bridge (Ponte 25 de Abril) spanning the river combine to create one of Lisbon's most iconic sights. 🌇 View of Belém from the observation deck There's an elevator inside the monument to an observation deck. From the top, you can take in panoramic views of the Jerónimos Monastery (Mosteiro dos Jerónimos), the Belém Tower (Torre de Belém), and the promenade along the river.
