Zhili, named because it was directly subordinate to the capital. The Zhili Governor had significant power, overseeing military, administrative, salt affairs, river channels, and the Beiyang Minister, with authority extending beyond the Zhili Province. Throughout the Qing Dynasty, from Yongzheng to Xuantong, the Zhili Governor's Office had a history of 187 years with 74 governors serving 99 terms. Many were prominent officials, such as Li Wei, who built the Lianchi Academy and was trusted by Emperor Yongzheng, the diligent and honest Tang Zhiyu, Fang Guancheng, one of the 'Five Governors of Qianlong' known for his agricultural and water management, and famous late Qing officials like Zeng Guofan, Li Hongzhang, and Yuan Shikai. Li Hongzhang served the longest, for 25 years. The Zhili Governor's Office faces south, featuring small-style hard mountain architecture with typical northern government office building style. The main part of the office is in the central route, consisting of five courtyards arranged in a north-south axis, with main rooms in each courtyard and side rooms on both sides.
