Bangkok's Must-Visit: Wat Pho

Wat Pho, one of Bangkok's oldest temples, is renowned for its massive and intricate Reclining Buddha statue. It is also considered the birthplace of traditional Thai massage. Giant Reclining Buddha The Reclining Buddha is 46 meters long and 15 meters high, nearly filling an entire hall. The statue is gold-plated, exuding a serene demeanor that symbolizes Buddha's state of Nirvana. The soles of the feet are engraved with 108 auspicious patterns, representing the 'auspicious signs' in Buddhism. Be sure to take a closer look. Cluster of Stupas The temple houses 99 stupas, adorned with colorful ceramic tiles and shells. Walking among them makes for stunning photo opportunities. To visit the main hall where the Reclining Buddha is located, you need to remove your shoes at the entrance. Bags are provided to store your shoes. The entire statue is covered in gold leaf, with its right hand supporting its head in a reclining pose, symbolizing Buddha's pursuit of Nirvana. The most exquisite part is the pair of 5-meter-long feet, with soles inlaid with mother-of-pearl depicting 108 auspicious patterns, including deities and mythical creatures, signifying Buddha's 108 virtuous deeds. On the other side of the Reclining Buddha, there are 108 bronze bowls. Dress Code As a sacred Buddhist site, Wat Pho requires modest attire that covers shoulders and knees. The temple provides robes for visitors if needed, but dressing conservatively shows respect for the religious site. Opening Hours: 08:00–18:30 Take the MRT to Sanam Chai Station and exit at Exit 1: Museum Siam. The temple is about a 350-meter walk from there.
