Wat Chang Yai

Wat Chang Yai was built in the Ayutthaya period around 2250 B.E. The temple’s builders are believed to be Mon people who sought refuge under the royal patronage of King Borommakot. This area used to be the site of an elephant corral, a place for training wild elephants, and a home to many wild elephants. It is believed that the Mon people who helped build Wat Chang Yai were the Mon people who were responsible for taking care of important elephants. Among the elephants taken care of by the Mon were King Naresuan’s war elephants. Inside the chapel is the principal Buddha image, originally named “Luang Pho Thong”, later renamed “Luang Pho Dam Sak Sits”.
