Tanah Merah Art Reasort (meaning red earth) is the brainchild and creation of Danish dentist, Peter Bloch, who purchased some land overlooking the Petanu River Gorge and began building this oasis at the start of the millennium. While designing the entire resort from scratch, the owner has also amassed a vast collection of curios and antiques from around Asia and Europe -- numerous of which are scattered around the hotel, but he opened a nine-room underground museum to house the rest. The resort's architecture was also largely hand-made by master Timorese wood carvers resulting in a wonderfully eclectic and often intricately crafted complex set in sprawling tropical gardens -- much of which affords breathtaking views over the dense jungle and river valley below. Design enthusiasts will be drawn by the numerous art objects and attention to detail while families and couples seeking relaxation can kick back throughout the serene, lush grounds. #createwithtrip #staycation

The Warwick Ibah Luxury Villas and Spa is a romantic resort geared toward travelers who want an authentic Balinese vacation that looks like a scene from the Tomb Raider, with five acres of tropical grounds, intricate stone carvings and archways, mossy brick-walled pathways, and fishponds. The grounds, however, have a lot of stairs and walkways are sometimes uneven and not always adequately illuminated at night. The 1996-built property is on royal land and blessing ceremonies on the property are often conducted by the prince of Ubud. IBAH is carved in stone above the wooden front desk in the elegant and minimally decorated lobby. The open-air lobby lounge is beside a koi pond, with books on loan and classical Balinese furniture. Cave cabanas -- draped in tropical flora -- are beside the saltwater pool. On the deck, near the tiki poolside bar, are lounge chairs that overlook the forest landscape. A waterfall cascades down to the second pool, with a cabana on the deck. The overall atmosphere is enchanting and romantic. #createwithtrip #staycation

The Banyumala Twin Waterfalls are definitely some of the most impressive falls in Bali. The waterfalls are massive and absolutely stunning, and going for a swim here is amazing! The best time to visit Banyumala Twin Waterfalls is March to October. It’s best to avoid this spot during the monsoon season from November to February since the trail can get really slick. Also, in order to avoid the crowds and enjoy a swim to yourself, it’s best to visit before 10:30 am and aim for a weekday. The waterfall area is small compared to the grander Sekumpul Waterfall, yet it’s still a peaceful area to relax and go for a swim at the bottom of the cascades. We spent around 30 minutes taking photos and dipping our feet in the water. The water is refreshing so it’s not too cold. It’s the right temperature to cool off from Bali’s humid weather. #createwithtrip

Brimming with artistic charm, the Mansion Resort Hotel & Spa is a competitively priced upscale property that offers numerous art galleries, exhibitions, and an art shop. The property feels like a museum that’s eclectically decorated with artifacts, paintings, porcelain, photography, contemporary sculptures, and traditional Balinese artwork. A circular driveway is adorned in colorful flags and umbrellas that lead to the pagoda-style entrance. A double staircase and a hanging chandelier in the lobby create a grand first impression. The expansive art collection in common areas, however, can feel cluttered. There are numerous beautiful pools on-site. The Sunset Pool is set by a lily pond, with tiki cabana beds and palm trees. The Sunrise Pool has colorful patio furniture on the deck, a cabana, and forest views. The circular Beach Club Pool has a palm-shaded deck with rattan lounge chairs and bamboo cabanas. The Sun Kissed Pool is surrounded by a green lawn, thatched-roof huts, stylish rattan lounge chairs, and a snack bar. Guests are typically tourists of various ages who don't mind being outside the action in Ubud. #createwithtrip #staycation

KajaNe Yangloni is set among manicured tropical gardens, with sprawling grass lawns, rice fields, and flowing koi ponds in seemingly every direction. This setting alone manages to pull in loyal guests in spades, offering a convincingly tranquil alternative to the KajaNe property in central Ubud. There are numerous quiet nooks hidden amid the gardens and rice fields to unwind with a good book or just take in the scenery. The vibe is laid back and the on-site facilities offer something for both families and couples, including free daily cultural activities for adults and children. Interiors throughout are contemporary, but the architecture, decor, and grounds are steeped in Balinese design, architecture, and landscaping. This is one of the only properties in the Mas area that offers such extensive facilities. Guests that who don't mind the commute into Ubud -- or who just want to relax in a quiet resort-like setting -- will find that Kajane Yangloni offers better value for money than many of the similarly priced hotels in downtown Ubud. #createwithtrip #staycation

Guests who want to be near nature, but not exactly one with it, will likely adore this intimate boutique property. Nestled among gorgeous green foliage and overlooking rice terraces, the hotel is certainly a tranquil escape from city life. The spotless interiors, combining granite floors with teak wood wall panels, and traditional Balinese sculptures with bright, contemporary sofa cushions and wall art make this a decidedly modern hotel among the rustic surroundings. Given the small size of the hotel, it has a certain exclusive air, but the overall relaxed vibe keeps it from coming off as pretentious. With an emphasis on being a quiet retreat rather than a buzzing hub of activity, and its minimum guest age limit of 15 years, the hotel is most attractive to couples. Planted in a narrow passage between sun-dappled rice paddies, the hotel’s location is nothing short of stunning, and a welcome change from beachfront resorts for some guests. The rather isolated area (the hotel has no neighbors) makes for a quiet atmosphere and beautiful views. Cars have difficulty accessing the narrow lane to the hotel, so the hotel provides motorcycles for the last few feet to the entrance. Although the location is secluded, the center of Ubud (and Ubud Palace) isn’t far off, only about a 20-minute walk away. #createwithtrip #staycation

Royal Villa Jepun is a boutique hotel with a serene and tranquil tropical setting and breezy laid-back common in which to relax. The property features Balinese architecture and decor with red-brick facades, stone archways, and open-air common areas that have thatched roofs, cream-color marble floors, and hardwood trim and furniture. The grounds stay consistently cool and shady thanks to tall trees, manicured tropical greenery, flowing koi ponds, and intricately carved stone statues of Hindu deities dotted along the property. Facilities are limited, with just a small plant-accented restaurant and an outdoor swimming pool that has a lagoon-like vibe and a lush tropical setting. Both the restaurant and the lobby area offer breezy spaces for relaxing and are outfitted with comfy couches, tables, and chairs. The property is scenic but does show signs of age. Also, some of the common spaces are a little cluttered and in need of maintenance. #createwithtrip #staycation

Payogan Villa Resort - Open since 2001, this sprawling resort is nestled in a hillside forest and has a romantic Balinese feel. Vistas are dotted with buildings that have pagoda and thatched roofs, and the green landscape is filled with beautiful small temples, pools, fountains, and carved walls. It all seems ready-made for plenty of photo ops. The hotel is in a secluded, quiet area, with just the sounds of nature providing the backdrop for relaxation, and there are 17 acres of tropical garden land to explore. Check-in takes place seated at tables in the huge open-air lobby, and guests are welcomed with a cold drink and towel. The pagoda ceilings tower overhead, and hand-carved hardwood furniture is set about the polished marble floors. While there is an overall upscale feel to almost every aspect of the resort, some of the common areas -- particularly the spa -- need a little freshening up. The resort's romantic and picturesque setting is especially appealing to couples, but some families come to make use of the spacious villas with private pools. #createwithtrip #staycation

Komaneka at Bisma Resort - This property is surrounded by tropical foliage and rice fields, and overwhelmed with green. Parts of the resort are on the Campuhan River, meaning that the sounds of flowing water can be heard in this retreat-like setting. The external surroundings, woodwork, and pathways are well-maintained, and the gardens beautifully manicured. Some of the tropical trees are labeled, which adds an educational component to a meander around the grounds. From the moment of arrival in the open-air lobby -- which makes nice use of natural wood and surrounds a fountain that's designed to evoke rice paddies -- guests are made to feel welcome. The friendliness of the staff never seems to abate; they seem to have a sixth sense for anticipating every needs and learn the names of their guests, which include solo travelers, couples, and families. #createwithtrip #staycation

The most remote Komaneka property, Tanggayuda makes the most of its natural surroundings but doesn't stint when it comes to providing a luxurious experience. The entrance is an unassuming circular drive off a small brick road, which gives no indication of the lush grounds beyond. The lobby and check-in area are open-air and simple, with a cheery yellow hue. Marble floors and a few wooden benches and chairs are pretty much the extent of the lobby furnishings. Inside the property are wooden hallways and stone paths with hanging vines. The glass elevator allows for views even while changing floors. Families and couples, including honeymooners, seem to favor this property. #createwithtrip #staycation

The Uma By COMO, Ubud is a luxury property with understated designs that lets the tropical seven-acre setting -- with views of the Oos River and Tjampuhan Valley -- shine. The romantic and secluded property is geared toward couples, but also families who want privacy. Stylish and minimalist interior designs were created by Japan’s Koichiro Ikebuchi. The thatched-roof lobby features stone floors, cushioned wooden chairs, and a raw wooden coffee table. The large pool is surrounded by tropical foliage, with white lounge chairs and umbrellas on a wooden deck. A vine-covered terrace offers shaded lounge chairs. The overall atmosphere is intimate, quiet, and serene. #createwithtrip #staycation
