Casa Juanita Review: The Blue Jewel of Lanzarote

#canaryislands Tucked along the coastline of #lanzarote, in the charming fishing village of Arrieta, Casa Juanita stands as one of the island’s most iconic and photogenic landmarks. This little blue-and-white house, nicknamed La Casa China or The Chinese House by locals, is unlike anything else in the region — a splash of whimsy right on the edge of the sea. Built in the early 20th century by a wealthy landowner for his sick daughter, the house was meant to be a place of healing, far from the industrial smoke of mainland Spain. Its architecture is unique on the island, with red pagoda-style roofing and bright turquoise shutters that seem to glow under the Lanzarote sun. Over time, it became not just a private retreat but a symbol of Arrieta’s quirky charm and the island’s deep connection to the sea. Just steps from Casa Juanita lies Playa de la Garita, a golden-sand beach beloved by both locals and travelers. It’s perfect for swimming, surfing, or just soaking in the sun with the silhouette of Casa Juanita in the background. The waves are usually gentle, and the vibe is wonderfully relaxed. Around the area, you’ll find plenty of family-owned seafood restaurants offering fresh catches of the day. A local favorite is El Amanecer, just a short walk from the house, where you can try grilled octopus, vieja (a Canarian fish), or a hearty portion of papas arrugadas con mojo. Expect to pay around 12 to 18 euros per main dish, and about 3 euros for a local beer. 🐟🍺 Getting to Arrieta from #lanzarote Airport is easy. You can rent a car for about 25 to 35 euros a day, which is the best way to explore the island freely. The drive takes just under 30 minutes, weaving through volcanic landscapes and quaint villages. Alternatively, there are buses, but service can be infrequent, and having your own transport is highly recommended. Casa Juanita may not be open to the public, but its exterior alone is worth the trip. Whether you’re a photographer, an architecture lover, or just someone chasing offbeat travel gems, this little house by the sea captures something truly magical about Lanzarote.
