Lycian Tomb & Roman Amphitheater

On the northern outskirts of Myra, at the foot of the low range of the Taurus mountains, around 1.9 kilometers 25 minutes walk from St Nicholas Church at the town of Demre. It is open daily from 0800-1700. The necropolis Lycian rock tombs were always placed at the top of the hills or on the cliffs as there was a belief that the dead would be transported to another world by a flying wing-like creature. Some tombs had the shape of houses, very similar to those in which the Lycians lived during their lifetime. Beside is theRoman Amphitheater which is one of the best preserved in the Lycian Regionthat was built during the Roman period, it can hold approximately 11000 people. As all the other Roman theaters, it was used both for theatrical performances and gladiatorial fights.
