The Ascension Cathedral is a Russian Orthodox cathedral located in Almaty and is one of the local landmark buildings. The cathedral was built in 1907 and has a total height of 56 meters, making it the second tallest wooden church in the world. During the Soviet era, the cathedral was used as a museum and radio station. It was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church in 1995 and reopened in 1997.
