Germany's first World Heritage Site, registered in 1978. When Germany and France were not separate countries but were called the Frankish Kingdom, King Charlemagne built it as a palace church in 786! Aachen Cathedral is a wonderful church that is said to have no similarities to other German churches in terms of its history, architectural style, and the splendor of the cathedral.
