I stayed at a hotel in Yoichi, Hokkaido that I had been curious about because it looked like Harry Potter 🏨 Yoichi Abrandt Hotel is a hotel with distinctive British-style architecture. Last June and September, I visited Hakodate, but the cherry trees were already covered in green leaves, leaving me with a slight sense of regret. This year, I decided to visit during the cherry blossom season, and it was truly worth it! From the weeping cherry blossoms at Hokkeji Temple, the cherry blossom-lined paths along the Ono River, Trappistine Monastery, Kosetsuen Garden, and Hakodate Park (night blossoms!), to Goryokaku Park and Sakuragaoka Street, I took over 500 photos in total. Although it was tiring for my partner and a bit exhausting for me as well, it was an unforgettable experience!

At the Nikka Whisky distillery, just a short walk from the station, I was overwhelmed by the historic building and spacious grounds, and felt the depth of whiskey-making. The aroma and flavor of the raw liquor I sampled was intense and truly authentic. The whole town was laid-back, and it was nice to be able to spend my time leisurely without being rushed. The seafood bowl I ate while looking out at the nearby sea was also excellent, and the local flavor was comforting. It wasn't flashy, but it was a memorable place.

From Otaru, go to Yoichi Station. Even though I don't know Japanese, they give me a paper with explanations and the tasting was great. Because it's winter, the scenery is also very charming and nice.

I visited the Nikka Whisky Yoichi Distillery, which is also the setting for the morning drama 'Massan'. I took a train from Otaru, which took about 25 minutes. Since there are only one or two trains per hour, make sure to check the schedule carefully! There is also a bus that takes about 40 minutes (both cost 440 yen one way). You need a reservation for the tour! We called on the same day and were able to get a reservation (on a weekday). You can learn how whisky is made and even tour parts of the factory that are usually off-limits. You can not only see but also smell the changing aromas as the whisky is being made. There is also a simple explanation in English, so I think overseas visitors can enjoy it too! At the end, we got to taste three types of whisky. They teach you the recommended way to drink it, so you can enjoy it deliciously. For those who can't drink alcohol or drivers, soft drinks are provided. After that, we bought some souvenirs!
