2025 Yogyakarta Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in March)
With a thriving population of about half a million residents, Yogyakarta is at once one of the largest cities in Java, and also the most popular tourist destination. If you are looking to check out some Javanese art, you have now come to the right place. Whether its traditional architecture and painting, or dance and shadow-puppet performances, this city is the leading cultural haven for a variety of traditional means of expression. Though there is truly an overabundance of beautiful ornate temples, a few most noteworthy specific ones to check out are Borobudur and Prambanan Buddhist temple complexes. The truly one-of-a-kind architecture of the stupas found at these locations is some of the most unique architectural creations ever constructed, and gives off a sort of haunting mystical aura thanks to their stunning appearance. The list of attractions goes on and here, with several UNESCO World Heritage Site and plenty of stunning natural attractions to go along with the man made ones. For a unique look at a culture that seems alien under the gaze of western-centric perspectives, Yogyakarta is a veritable showcase of mysterious beauty.

Tugu Jogja – Lively Night Atmosphere
#1月好去地方2025
At 9pm, we took a walk around Tugu Jogja, looking for a place to have dinner. I didn’t expect to feel a strong lively atmosphere as soon as I arrived at the roundabout. The whole place was full of energy. The coffee shops around the roundabout were full of young people, who gathered together to chat and drink coffee, looking very relaxed.
We also noticed that there were always a lot of people taking pictures in the middle of the circle, especially at night when the lights shone on the monument, forming a beautiful background, attracting many tourists and locals to take pictures.

Explore the Traditional Markets of Yogyakarta! Pasar Beringharjo: A Shopping Paradise You Can't Miss.
At Pasar Beringharjo in Yogyakarta, you can truly experience the local life and cultural atmosphere of Indonesia. It is a popular spot for both locals and tourists. If you want to delve into the daily life of Yogyakarta and buy local specialty products, this is undoubtedly an excellent choice.
Besides the products, the atmosphere at Pasar Beringharjo is also vibrant. Local vendors enthusiastically promote various goods, and sometimes they even invite you to taste their snacks. Each stall has its unique features, and during the selection process, you can feel the strong Indonesian hospitality.
Hidden Historical Mosque in Yogyakarta - Masjid Gedhe Mataram Kotagede
This time, I unexpectedly visited a historical mosque in Yogyakarta - Masjid Gedhe Mataram Kotagede. This mosque, which has been around for centuries, combines Javanese and Islamic architectural styles. Compared to other mosques, the atmosphere here is much more serene.
When we visited, the weather was hot, but the interior of the mosque was very cool, surrounded by greenery.
This place is not a popular tourist spot, so there were not many people during our visit. It is suitable for travelers who enjoy exploring history and culture. If you come to Yogyakarta, consider arranging a trip to this historically rich mosque to experience the local culture's tranquility and stories!
Yogyakarta Water Palace|A Small Yet Unique Historical Site
Yogyakarta's Water Palace (Taman Sari) may not cover a large area, but its unique historical atmosphere and architectural style make it worth a visit. The entire site can be toured in about 15 minutes on foot, but the exquisite royal bathing pools, hidden underground mosque, and unique Javanese-Portuguese architectural style make this short trip full of surprises.
On the day of our visit, the Water Palace was crowded with locals, with people taking photos in almost every corner. Finding a quiet spot to take a picture was really challenging, and even taking a simple photo required waiting in line.
The place was bustling with people. Although the site itself was beautiful, we didn't stay long because of the crowd. After a brief walk to soak in the local atmosphere, we decided to leave. Although we couldn't take leisurely photos as we had hoped, experiencing the history and the enthusiasm of the crowd here was a different kind of experience!
Yogyakarta Railway Station|White colonial-style building
Yogyakarta Tugu Railway Station is a railway hub with a long history. The white colonial-style building has become an important landmark in Yogyakarta city. The overall architectural style combines the Dutch colonial period, with an elegant appearance, spacious interior, and a strong historical atmosphere.
The white European-style exterior of the station building contrasts beautifully with the blue sky, making it a great place to take photos and check in.
The station is kept clean and tidy, with self-service ticket machines, waiting areas and snack stalls, where passengers can easily buy tickets and enjoy Indonesian snacks

📍 Indonesia Yogyakarta Water Palace Taman Sari
🏠55133Indonesia Special Region of Yogyakarta, Yogyakarta City, Kraton, Patehan
It used to be a resting place for the royal family
I heard that the Sultan of Yogyakarta liked to play in the water with his concubines here, hence the name Water Palace.
And the Indonesian word Taman Sari
Meaning "beautiful garden with blooming flowers"
The ancient water palace was much larger than today
Because of the destruction caused by earthquakes and wars,
Only a little bit in the middle is left to see the whole thing in about 10 minutes
A ticket is required to come in, which is 25k Indonesian rupiah for non-locals
It’s beautiful to take pictures here
I can only say that Sultan knows how to enjoy it.
If you come here more often, you can take a tour with the palace.
It's a pity that the palace was closed for renovations on the day I came.

The beauty of Yogyakarta Airport
YIA is an abbreviation of the name of the international airport Yogyakarta International Airport, located at the southwest tip of Yogyakarta Province. This airport is still new, the nuance presented very cool and thick Javanese culture. The size is quite large because it embeds the term International which is quite influential.
Access to this airport is quite far from the city, about 1 hour by shuttle bus which we can easily find after exiting the exit gate. The price of the shuttle bus is relatively affordable and there are many choices of fleets.
Judging from its architecture, I think this airport is part of the beautiful airports in Indonesia. Hopefully, the transfer of commercial flights to this new airport will make Yogyakarta even more visitors

Be Indiana Jones at Candi Bubrah 🤠
My visit into Candi Bubrah in Yogyakarta was like a journey into Indonesia's rich culture and history.
When i saw this ancient temple, I immediately impressed by its intricate carvings, which reflected the mastery of ancient Javanese craftsmen. Despite its smaller size compared to other nearby temples, it doesn’t mean that it loses out in cultural significance nor grandeur. If only this was in Singapore, it would be one of our top tourist attractions 😂
Candi Bubrah exuded a serene aura and it offered a peaceful escape from the bustling city of Jogja. Exploring its weathered stones and quiet surroundings felt like stepping back in time, connecting me to a bygone era. The temple's slightly remote location added to its charm, providing me with that sense of discovery and adventure! 🧭

Eccentric Culinary Journey in Jogja 🤯
For my last night in Yogyakarta, I wanted to try some traditional Javanese food and that is where I came across the House of Raminten. Arriving at 7pm, we waited for approximately 10 minutes for our table to be ready. Stepping into the restaurant, you are immediately hit by its eccentric charm and unexpected surprises. The decor exudes a whimsical blend of traditional Javanese motifs, vibrant colors but also unexpected items (like a statue of Jesus standing over Wayang Kulit puppets, the hot tub at the corner of the restaurant. The most peculiar feature has to be the small horse stable nestled discreetly at the back of the restaurant, housing two ponies. This unexpected sight added a unique touch to the dining experience and is definitely a conversation starter. I remember excitedly telling my wife about the stable when I got back from my trip to the washroom LOL.
Amidst this intriguing ambiance, we ordered the Bakso Sapi and Sego Gudeg Ayam. The Bakso Sapi had rich broth and tender meatballs, and it was definitely my comfort food when travelling to Indonesia. The highlight of the meal must be the Jogja special - Sego Gudeg Ayam. The traditional Javanese dish featured a jackfruit stewed with chicken, and as it was my first time trying gudeg, I would not have thought that I was having cooked jackfruit if I was blindfolded. The texture really resembles stewed meat, coupled with the sweet sauce, the jackfruit is hardly discernable!
It was an interesting and enchanting experience dining at the House of Raminten and would recommend it to others looking for traditional Javanese food in Jogja!

To me, Hong Kong is a city that has so much to offer - culture, outdoors, nightlife, food and history! I want to travel to Hong Kong to visit the Instagram spot of Sai Wan Swimming Shed, the traditional Man Mo Temple, stop at a cafe at Sheung Wan to savour a cup of latte and...so much more!
Splash of Colour @ Tujuan Cafe
I came across Tujuan Cafe when we ate at Mediterranea by Kamil which was just down the road. We were drawn by the design and colours of the cafe, and promised ourselves to visit this place when we had the chance!
Today, the chance came and walking in, we found the ambience to be delightful, chill and fun. We ordered a Kopi Susu, Matcha Latte and a side of truffle fries to quench our thirst and to fill our greedy appetites.
Their Kopi Susu is was rich in flavour and sweet, just the right drink for a super hot summer day (real feel was 38 degrees celsius). I really liked it. The Matcha Latte however was a tad too sweet and there was no real taste of matcha. Would give that a miss if we were to come back.
The truffle fries was not not particularly great nor bad. It was served with a mix of mushroom sauce and chilli sauce, which was quite unique and paired well with the fries.
While I wouldn’t be back for the food or drinks, the cozy atmosphere and fun design of the place made up for it.

Artisanal Bakery Delights with Viavia
Viavia Artisan Bakery in Yogyakarta is a hidden gem for pastry lovers! My wife ordered the egg tart which was a true delight. With a flaky crust and creamy custard filling that melted in our mouth, each bite had a perfect balance of sweetness and richness.
For me, I got their walnut raisin cookie as I’m a Cookie Monster. It was a hard and chewy cookie, with just the right amount of crunch from the walnuts and sweetness from the raisins. The cookie was also thicker than I had expected and it left me pretty full.
The bakery itself has a cozy atmosphere, perfect for enjoying a leisurely treat with a cup of coffee or tea. There is limited seating available outside the bakery, and when we went after our lunch, there was no one competing with us for seats.
The staff are friendly and welcoming, adding to the overall experience. Whether you're craving something sweet or savory, be sure to check out Viavia Artisan Bakery if you are in the area!

Morning Feast at TERA 🤤
The breakfast buffet at Tera All Day Dining was a great experience! There were many yummy options to choose from, like fluffy pancakes, omelette, roasted chicken and fresh fruit. There was even a noodle station where you could choose what packet of noodles you wanted and they would cook it for you. On the baked goods side, there wasn’t a spread but a decent enough selection. For those that want to try their local delicacies, you will be happy to know that there is a dedicated area with Indonesian dishes. I tried a stewed beef and a stewed lamb dish from there, both of which went well with rice.
So whether you like sweet or savory foods, there is something for everyone. The staff were super friendly and made sure everything was clean and well-stocked. I also liked the cozy atmosphere of the restaurant—it felt like a special treat to start the day there. Overall, I had a great time at the breakfast buffet and would definitely go back again!

Culinary Odyssey: My best meal in Jogja
Dining at Mediterranea Restaurant by Kamil in Yogyakarta was an exquisite culinary journey that delighted my senses from start to finish.
The Calzone Mediterranea, a savory delight, enveloped me in layers of perfectly baked dough filled with a harmonious medley of egg, ham and mozzarella cheese with tomato sauce. Each bite revealed the symphony and harmony of the ingredients. Truly sedap!
The Insalata Caprese was a dish with ripe tomatoes, creamy buffalo mozzarella, and fragrant basil drizzled in olive oil. It was lighter in flavour and nicely balanced out the heavier Calzone.
For the finale, we had the Apple Pie Tati, which was served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It was a decadent indulgence that stole my heart. The buttery crust crumbled delicately with each forkful, while the cinnamon-infused apples danced on my taste buds, creating a symphony of sweetness.

Taste of the World with Viavia Jogja
My lunch at Viavia Jogja Restaurant was a nice experience! The place was clean, had a really chill vibe with comfortable seating and fun decorations.
My wife tried the chicken laksa (IDR 80k) and it was unique! It was different from the ones we have back home in Singapore, kinda leaning more towards a Mee Soto and Laksa hybrid. The noodles were like the instant noodles kind, and the soup base was full-bodied, somewhat leaning towards a curry texture.
For myself, I had the Soto betawi (IDR 60K) and it was delicious! The beef was tender, and the main highlight was definitely the flavourful broth.
The prices are generally in the higher side compared to other places in Yogyakarta, but you do get a nice ambience and a good variety of cuisines. If you get bored of Indonesian food in Yogyakarta, this is a place to consider!

Colourful comfort at ARTOTEL
Staying at ARTOTEL Suites Bianti Yogyakarta was really value for money. I booked a 4 night stay here through Trip.com and it came up to only about SGD50+ a night.
First impression, the hotel lobby looked pretty new and modern. I arrived early and the room was not ready, so I just left my luggage. The staff offered to bring it up to my room once the room was ready. Great service by the staff!
The rooms…where should I start. The king sized bed was big and comfy. The room had huge windows that allowed sunlight to come in. The toilet was clean and my personal favourite is the herbal shower and shampoo amenities.
The hotel also has a small pool and gym…which isn’t the best. But hey, im not really there for the gym!
I had a blast staying there and would totally stay with ARTOTEL again if the opportunity arises!

Half day in Jogja
Took a direct flight from Kuala lumpur to Yogyakarta
Arrived at 1pm and went directly to our Hotel in Malioboro area by grabcar (tips here: taking train is faster and cheaperthan grabcar)
After checked-in, lunch in Iga Bajog - very juicy tender grilled beef ribs! And it is very cheap here
Then went back to Malioboro street, if you’re looking for indonesia traditional batik clothing, then here is the heaven. Along malioboro street, you will see a lot of Delman or andong which is two-wheeled horse-drawn vehicle pulled by a single horse in shafts, or driven tandem. There is no fixed price for the delman ride , so try your best in negotiating
For dinner, we chose Raminten Jogja. If you’re looking for traditional javanese food, then this is the place to go to!! Good service, however, it was very crowded , so we had to wait 1 hour for our table

There is a bunch of animals in this restaurant! It’s crazy. From the moment you step into the restaurant, the first thing you see are these HUGE ostriches. And then you realise there’re just a ton of other animals around. Civets, parrots, and other exotic birds. But don’t worry, this place doesn’t smell like a zoo!

Eat Ice Cream In A Different Way⁉️👀🫠
Well, today i want to share about an Unique Food that i tried in Yogyakarta, named “Rujak Ice Cream Pak Nardi”.
Why i said that this is an Unique Food? in Indonesia i never find someone or in any city sells the combonation of Rujak and Ice cream. But i find it in Yogyakarta and surprisingly this dessert are so famous here.
<>
At the first i think the taste of Rujak Ice Cream will be so strange, but im wrong! the spicy, sour and the sweet is soooo balanced! it blanded well and it feels like melt in my mouth, i want to say don’t missed this dishes when you are in Yogyakarta.
Rujak Es Cream Pak Nardi is not too far from the City Centre (titik 0KM and malioboro area), you can easily walk to this place or riding bike/car/motorbike, they have huge parking lot!
The price for 1 portions of Rujak Es Cream is only IDR 10.000 (USD 0,65).

Tugu Jogja: The Symbol Of Yogyakarta City🫀
Tugu Yogyakarta is a monument that is used as a symbol of the city of Yogyakarta. Tugu Jogja is also known as Yogyakarta Monument, Located near Margo Utomo street. This monument was built by the Dutch government after the previous monument collapsed due to the earthquake that occurred at that time.
The previous monument called Tugu Golong-Gilig was built by Hamengkubuwana I, the founder of the Yogyakarta palace. This monument, which is located at the intersection of Jalan Jenderal Sudirman and Jalan Margo Utomo, has symbolic value and is a magical line connecting the southern sea, the Jogja palace and Mount Merapi.
When he was meditating, it is said that the Sultan of Yogyakarta at that time used this monument as a benchmark for facing the peak of Mount Merapi.
