The day we made our way to Cristo Rei was one of excitement, because this was the highlight of our Timor-Leste expedition! Along the coastal road to Cristo Rei, we spotted an erection that served as a reminder of Timor-Leste’s political struggles, which reminded us of our own impending uphill task - ascending some 598 steps to the summit of Cristo Rei Hill! Midway up the climb, I got distracted by a stairway leading down to the emerald waters of a very enticing beach… But the climb must continue! About 30 steps to the summit, we were greeted by a panoramic view of both sides of the peninsula, with the coasts facing opposite directions visible all at once! And then… THERE IT WAS! The statue of Cristo Rei! It might be just a fraction of the size of Rio de Janerio’s Christ the Redeemer, but it was regal nonetheless. Cue majesty music! Caught an awe-inspiring sunset from the top of the hill as a bonus. Spent a full day on the island of Atauro, about an hour away by speedboat from Dili. It was an easy journey; the waters were not choppy, and the weather was just perfect. I awestruck when we were about to disembark at Beloi Beach, because the water was crystal clear! Atauro’s Beloi Beach was a hive of activity. The islanders were going about their daily lives, unbothered by the occasional curious tourists. Lunch was a massive feast at the warung, where everything on the table was either organically grown in their own backyard or caught fresh from the sea that day and cooked outdoors in open fires. The seaweed was a personal favourite. We hitched a ride with the islanders to the highest point of Atauro to take in the views and snap a few pictures for posterity. The boat ride back to Dili was a pleasant hour of watching the sun set and the sky bathe in various shades of dusk before going completely dark. I went to eat Indonesian food, bakso! Bakso is very popular among East Timorese people! [What kind of food is bakso?] It is a dish with a salty soup and noodles like vermicelli, instant noodles, and meatballs! You can also add eggs and other toppings to your liking! East Timorese people eat it with a lot of ketchup and sweet sauce. When I tried it, I got addicted to the strange taste that was like a cross between ramen and Neapolitan. [Bustling people around the store] To get to the store, I took a minibus. On the way, I could see the quiet sea view from the window. As I got closer to the store, the number of people and motorbikes on the road increased. I took a domestic flight to Timor-Leste, a small island nation in Southeast Asia! [Check-in from arrival at the airport] When I arrived at the airport, I headed to the meeting place designated in advance. While I was waiting, an Australian pilot came to pick me up and guided me to the waiting room. After checking passenger information and the weight of my luggage in the waiting room, it was finally time to board. [Boarding the plane] I traveled by car from the waiting room to the plane. The plane had a total of seven seats and was very small. I could see the cockpit clearly. Traveling on a domestic flight in such a miniature plane is an experience that I can't often get anywhere else. [Air travel] I enjoyed the view from the sky for about 40 minutes from takeoff to arrival. I came across many views that made me feel like I was in Timor, such as the sea surrounding Timor Island, the city of Dili, the largest mountain on the island, Mt. I went to see the Christ the Redeemer statue in Timor-Leste, a small island nation in Southeast Asia. Timor-Leste's Cristo Rei is the second largest statue in the world after the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Sadly, Japan is not depicted on the globe under the statue. [Access🚗] It takes 30 minutes by car from the city center. You can also travel by minibus called Miklolet. You can view the statue up close by climbing the stairs for 15 to 20 minutes. Timor 🇹🇱 in 10th Jan 2025

I climbed to the top of Mt. Ramelau, the highest peak in Timor-Leste, with an elevation of 2,963m. After a three-hour bus ride from the capital Dili, I arrived at an intersection near Maubise. The only road in this area is a straight line, so the local word for intersection, "simpang," is a proper noun. From there, I changed to a motorbike and drove 1.5 hours on a rough road to Hatbiliko at the foot of the mountain. After a nap at the hotel, I set off at 3am, and after a smooth climb, I reached the summit just after 5am. After waiting for an hour and a half, freezing from there, it was finally time for sunrise. There were only three groups of climbers that day, including myself. I was able to monopolize the beautiful scenery with a few parties. I ran down the mountain, so it only took about 40 minutes to reach the trailhead. From there, I hitchhiked several times and was able to return to Dili that same day. It seems that there is a possibility of getting lost, so don't forget to carry a GPS and map. It was recommended to take a guide on the Lompula tour. #Mountaineering

The tallest and largest statue of Christ in Asia (Cristo Rei) is located in East Timor. Influenced by Portuguese colonialism, most East Timorese are Catholics. We took a minibus from the city center to Mount Jesus, looking at the stone carvings of Jesus' stories as we drove. It took less than 20 minutes to reach the statue of Jesus. Looking from a high place, you can have a panoramic view of the long coastline!
