Last school holiday, i brought my kids on an exciting trip to Tangkuban Perahu, a famous volcano near Bandung, Indonesia. As we drove up the winding hill roads, the air became cooler and the scent of sulfur filled the air. From afar, the mountain looked strange; just like an upside-down boat! No wonder they called it Tangkuban Perahu. When we reached the top, we stood at the edge of Kawah Ratu, the main crater. It was huge, smoky, and smelled like rotten eggs! But the view was magical. We took photos, ate roasted corn, and listened to a local guide who told us the legend of Sangkuriang and Dayang Sumbi. He said that Sangkuriang was a young man who wanted to marry a beautiful woman, not knowing she was his mother. To stop the marriage, the woman challenged him to build a boat by sunrise. When he failed, he kicked the boat in anger, and it landed upside down forming the mountain. As the wind blew through our jackets and laughter filled the air, we felt like we were inside a fairytale. Visiting Tangkuban Perahu wasn’t just a trip, it was a journey through nature and legend.

Visited Tangkuban Perahu as a part of local tour. Its an active volcano , last erupted in 2019 . Still active with emission of poisonous gases. There are steps around the volcano , which can be used for reaching the top level from where the view is very good. Ample car parking and lot of tourist activity. Worth the visit . Its nearly 3-4 hrs by car travel from Jakarta. Located in bandung region . Just got back from the most unexpected yet amazing trip to Bandung with my husband and little brother and I’m still smiling about it! It was a totally last-minute plan — no itinerary, no expectations, just vibes. Our only goal was to visit Tangkuban Perahu… but thanks to our incredible driver, Pak Erick, the trip became so much more than that. He wasn’t just a driver, he was our spontaneous local guide! He brought us to some of the best spots in Bandung — from the serene Orchid Park to the fun Floating Market, and even a super cool De-u café with a gorgeous view of the city, and great coffee! It turned into a 12-hour adventure that we’ll never forget. Also, huge shoutout to trip.com! We managed to grab amazing deals on a couple of 4-star hotels (eL Hotel & Mercure Bandung City Center) — two rooms at a great price, all last minute. Since it’s Ramadan, we had a really good sahur at the hotel too. The food was satisfying and the rooms were nice and comfy (except for my brother’s room which had a little issue with the aircond — not ideal). While I probably wouldn’t recommend the hotel itself, I would definitely recommend trip.com if you need to book hotels quickly and affordably for a spontaneous trip! All in all, this unplanned journey ended up being one of the most fun and memorable travel days I’ve had in a while. The panoramic train from Bandung to Jakarta was also very scenic, and comfortable. I thought that it was gonna be hot due to the weather but the aircond power is great so it was a very comfortable 3 hours with a view! (Tho I recommend Whoosh for a time-efficient ride) Grateful for the good company, good food, and good vibes. With the affordable proce, i got many worth things here. such as amenities, good room with a good condition, good ac, and also breakfast for 2 person.
