The city itself, a melting pot of Malay, Batak, Javanese, Chinese, and Indian influences, is a fascinating place to explore. Architectural gems like the majestic Maimun Palace and the intricate Great Mosque of Medan (Masjid Raya Al-Mashun) stand as proud testaments to its royal and religious history. A particular highlight was the Tjong A Fie Mansion, a beautifully preserved house of a prominent Chinese merchant, which offers a rich glimpse into the city's past and its multicultural roots.
