The Hall of Heavenly Kings is a Jin Dynasty structure. Few of the major wooden components of this hall have been replaced during successive repairs. The pillars, beams, brackets, and Dougong are all relics of the Jin Dynasty. The intercolumnar Dougong brackets on the front eaves, with 45° and 60° oblique arches, are characteristic of the Jin Dynasty. The murals inside the hall are similar in style to those at Yongle Palace. The Four Heavenly Kings inside the hall are newly sculpted, but some faint murals remain behind them, similar in style to the murals of the Water and Land Dharma Assembly at Yongle Palace.

On the way to Longmen Temple, near the source of the Red Flag Canal, you'll pass through Cuijiazhuang Village. By the roadside, you'll find a Guandi Temple. Unattended and unvisited, only the main hall remains, built in 1647 during the Qing Dynasty (Shunzhi reign). It has a single-eave hard-ridge roof and a width of three bays. The main gate is closed, bearing a plaque that reads "Loyalty and Righteousness Reach the Heavens." The inscriptions on the stone stele under the eaves in front of the hall have been systematically defaced, likely during a specific period in history. Behind Huilong Temple, a short walk up a small path leads to a raised platform with a few village houses. Continue along the path, and at the end, you'll find another platform with a complex of ancient buildings, set against the backdrop of the Taihang Mountains. This is the Shrine of Yu the Great. Forget everything I just said; you can actually drive up to the platform. Don't ask me how I know. Legends of Yu the Great are widespread in Shanxi, especially in Pingshun County, where many temples are dedicated to him. However, only this one in Houbi Village bears the name "Shrine of Yu the Great." Historical records clearly indicate that the Shrine of Yu the Great was built in the second year of the Zhiyuan era of the Yuan Dynasty (1265 AD). Along its central axis are the mountain gate (which also serves as a reversed stage), a moon platform, and the main hall. On either side are east and west wing rooms and side halls. The reversed stage above the mountain gate is a relic of the Ming Dynasty. The main hall, a Yuan Dynasty structure, features a single-eave hip-and-gable roof, three bays wide and four purlins deep. The central bay has a wooden plank door, while the side bays have straight lattice windows. A small, elegant moon platform stands before the hall, with no offering hall. The moon platform has suffered some damage over time, and a carved inscription from the second year of the Zhiyuan era of the Yuan Dynasty can be found on the left side. ⛩️Chunhua Temple is the smallest and most unique ancient building in the Zhuozhang River Valley. Only one main hall remains and it is located in the middle of the river. On the day I went there, there was a busy market and stalls were lined up on both sides of the road. 🏘️An ancient building suddenly appeared in the market, with no courtyard walls, no mountain gates, just a lonely hall. In front of the hall, two sutra towers stood like candles in a small open space. 🏯According to the county annals, Chunhua Temple was first built during the Kaiyuan period of the Tang Dynasty. It originally had two courtyards, but now only one Buddhist temple remains, which is a relic of the Jin Dynasty. Single-eaved hip roof, tiled roof, and a flat roof. The door of the main hall is not open, but through the mullioned windows one can see some blue geometric painted patterns remaining under the beams and pillars. In front of the hall are two sutra pillars dating back to the third year of Kaibao in the Song Dynasty. They are made of octagonal stone with clear inscriptions. Both the upper and lower parts are shaped like upturned lotus petals, and the bottom part is a circular Sumeru pedestal. The two pagodas are respectively inscribed with the "Sutra of the Supreme Dharani" and the "Diamond Sutra". They were carved in the third year of Kaibao in the Northern Song Dynasty (970) and were written by Daozhen, the abbot of the Zen temple. The handwriting is clearly legible. On the back wall of the main hall there is a stone tablet erected by Abbot Guangmiao during the Dading period, with the words "Visiting Longmen and returning to Chunhua Temple" on it. Foutou Si, literally "Buddha Head Temple," derives its name from the surrounding terrain. Within the main hall, no inscriptions on steles or beams clearly indicating the temple's construction date have been found. Experts primarily rely on architectural style analysis and comparative studies for dating. The official conclusion currently attributes the structure to the Song Dynasty, although alternative theories suggest origins in the Jin or Ming Dynasties. The main hall's survival is attributed to its continuous use as a production team warehouse. During this period, the walls were whitewashed. In 2011, during a major restoration project by cultural preservation authorities, the whitewash was removed, revealing a complete wall of murals depicting the Twenty-Four Heavenly Deities. These legendary Yuan Dynasty murals were thus rediscovered. Currently, 22 discernible figures of deities remain on the murals. Each figure is vividly depicted and richly colored, representing a rare masterpiece of ancient murals in southeastern Shanxi. Additionally, numerous remnants of painted decorations can be found on the beams, brackets, and other wooden structural elements. Foutou Temple is located in Chedang Village. Where you park, there is a small temple originally dedicated to Sun Simiao, the "King of Medicine." Along the central axis are the screen wall, the mountain gate, and the main hall, with east and west side halls symmetrically arranged on both sides. The current buildings are relics from the Qing Dynasty. It is said that every year on the Double Third Festival, people from surrounding areas gather here for a grand temple fair. Folk performances, Shangdang Bangzi opera, and Medicine King ceremonies are all part of the festivities. Villagers also set up stalls, creating a lively scene. Unfortunately, I visited at the wrong time and couldn't go inside. I could only glimpse the main hall through the holes in the door before hurrying on.

Driving from Changzhi, I traveled for over an hour on Provincial Road 325 before finding the Jiutian Shengmu Temple. Before I even parked, I saw the Jiutian Shengmu Temple built on a mound. The brilliant red walls and the calm gray tiles combined to create a majestic aura, especially striking under the clear blue sky. This striking appearance seemed to say to those who arrived, "After traveling thousands of miles, someone finally came." Entering through the main gate, the traditional central axis symmetrical layout of ancient Chinese architecture revealed the Xian Hall, the Shengmu Hall, and the flanking halls on both sides: the Ear Hall, the Medicine King Hall, the Yama Hall, the Dressing Hall, the Confucius Hall, the Houtu Hall, the Ten Commanders Hall, the Li Jing Hall, and the Dragon King Hall. The entire temple complex doesn't occupy a large area, with the halls arranged in a compact and orderly fashion. The initial construction date of the temple is unknown, but inscriptions record renovations from the Song Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty. Therefore, this Jiutian Shengmu Temple combines the architectural features of the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. The main hall is Song Dynasty style, the Xian Hall is Yuan Dynasty style, the Dressing Hall is Ming Dynasty style, and the main gate is Qing Dynasty style. The integration of wooden structural features from different dynasties in one temple is also a major characteristic of ancient Shanxi architecture.

The Jiutian Shengmu Temple is a collection of ancient buildings from the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. Along the central axis are the mountain gate (with an inverted stage on top), the offering hall, and the Shengmu Hall. On both sides are the ear rooms, the Medicine King Hall, the Yama King Hall, the dressing building, the Confucius Hall, the Hou Tu Hall, the Ten Marshals Hall, the King Li Jing Hall, the Dragon King Hall, etc. Climbing up to the Dressing Building, you can clearly see the roofs of several buildings. The offering hall of the Jiutian Shengmu Temple is quite large in both area and volume, and its roof is a hip-and-gable style. In ancient architecture, the hip-and-gable roof was a high-ranking form. The offering hall of the Jiutian Shengmu Temple is a Yuan Dynasty structure, sitting on a 1m-high bluestone platform. The hall is surrounded by 16 chamfered sandstone square columns. The eaves are supported by a single layer of four bracket sets. The beam frame consists of six rafters extending to the front and back, supported by two columns. The secondary bays have two rafter beams connected to the eaves at the front and back, supported by four columns. The column heads are decorated with plain friezes, and railings are installed between the columns. The lateral and upward curves of the roof are not prominent.
