Malahide may just be one of Dublin’s best-kept secrets. Nestled along the coast just north of the city, this charming seaside town swept me off my feet with its blend of elegance, history, and laid-back atmosphere.
My day began at Malahide Castle, one of Ireland’s oldest occupied castles. Surrounded by sprawling parklands and ancient woodlands, the castle’s rich history was brought to life during a guided tour that felt more like a journey through time than a history lesson. The rooms are beautifully preserved, with antique furniture, portraits, and stories of the Talbot family echoing through the halls.
Outside, I wandered through the Botanic Gardens behind the castle—vibrant, peaceful, and surprisingly expansive. It was the perfect place to breathe in the fresh air and enjoy a slower pace.
Seaside Charm & Local Flavors
From the castle, I strolled down to Malahide Marina, where yachts lined the peaceful harbor and seagulls danced in the breeze. The waterfront was dotted with cafes and restaurants, and I grabbed lunch at Gibney’s—a local institution known for its seafood and warm pub atmosphere.
The town itself is small but full of life, with boutiques, bakeries, and smiling locals. I found a little gelato shop tucked away on a side street and enjoyed my cone while watching kids play near the boats.
Best Time to Visit:
May to September brings mild weather and longer days—perfect for castle tours and seaside walks.
Helpful Tips:
Take the DART from Dublin—it’s just a 30-minute scenic ride.
Bring a picnic and relax in the castle grounds if the weather’s nice.
For a longer stay, Malahide makes a cozy base for exploring coastal north Dublin.
Location: Malahide, County Dublin, Ireland

Just outside Ireland’s capital of Dublin lies the tranquil retreat of Malahide castle.
Visitors to this 12th century fortification can discover stories of a home and family that have played a key role in Irish history for over 800 years. Away from the main building the acres of parkland and gardens are perfect for a walk any time of the year and the butterfly gardens are also a must visit #voyagevibes #ireland #castle #butterfly
