Lake Tekapo is really well-deserved. When I saw it on a sunny day, I couldn't believe my eyes. It was so blue that I doubted my life! 💙 Many people think the lake is not blue just because the weather is not right! A sunny day will definitely shock you! No need to edit! Here are a few places I recommend, you can follow my route, I strongly recommend you to go, you can take 800 photos!!! 1️⃣ Go to "Astro Cafe" in the morning. This coffee is amazing! I would call it "the most beautiful cafe on earth" ☕ The most worthwhile place in Tekapo! No objection! The cafe is located at the "University of Canterbury Observatory", you must go here first, because it is only open until 2 pm, and vehicles entering the observatory need to queue, but we only waited for 20 mins, not too long... You can order some food and drinks to take pictures on the table, just learn from me how to take pictures hahaha 📸 (It is said to be open only on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, so we went on Friday to be safe) 2️⃣ There is a ⛰ big rock a few steps down from the cafe!!! 10/19-21 we were in Tekapo, I decided to write about Tekapo first in my New Zealand trip (10/10-10/22), mainly because it was at the end of the trip🤣 and the memories are still fresh🤣 We witnessed different beauties of Lake Tekapo during these three days, which left a deep impression on me. However, there was a bit of regret – the stargazing tour was cloudy, and we couldn't see the stunning Milky Way with the naked eye. We arrived in Tekapo on the afternoon of 10/19 (a quick note, we took a helicopter ride and did glacier hiking in Mount Cook that morning🤩). The weather in the afternoon was excellent, with few clouds, making the blue of Lake Tekapo incredibly beautiful (photos 1-3). Walking along the lake, not far away is the Church of the Good Shepherd (photos 4-5). I was very excited to see this church because I had seen many stunning photos of the Milky Way taken with this church in the foreground online. Tekapo has been dedicated to reducing artificial light pollution at night for decades, earning it the reputation of a stargazing town. Unfortunately, it was cloudy on the nights of the 19th and 20th, so our stargazing tour didn't go as planned. But it's okay to leave some regrets; we will come back next time! The itinerary on 10/20 was very free. After a leisurely breakfast, we walked along the lake towards the Mount John trail, aiming to reach the top and overlook Tekapo! The trail to Mount John is mostly shaded, making it less sunny but all uphill, with some gentle and some steep sections. The last part is an open grassland at the top. It took me almost an hour to hike up from the trailhead (going down only took half the time🤭). At the top, there is the Mount John University Observatory (where the night stargazing tour was supposed to be) and an Astro Cafe. After a short rest, it was photo time! The view of Lake Tekapo from the top is truly spectacular, and there is a rock that everyone must take a photo with (photos 6-7). However, it was cloudier on the 20th, so the lake wasn't as blue as the previous day, but still incredibly beautiful! We leisurely stayed on the mountain for an hour; it was really chill and relaxing🤣. Going down was very quick, and we headed straight to 'Morelea Lakeside.' The enthusiastic hostess made a delicious pavlova cake. For those who don't like sweet things, you can order unsweetened tea to go with it. The view from her house is absolutely stunning, and I envy her for seeing such fairyland-like scenery every day😍. On 10/21, before moving to the next city, we took a few more beautiful photos before noon🤣 (photos 10-12). Ah～～I really love this place!!! Looking forward to traveling here again!!!

When you are at Lake Tekapo and visiting the Church of the Good Shepherd, do pop by the sheepdog memorial just ~100m away. History: In 1855 James Mackenzie, a Scottish shepherd turned sheep stealer discovered the basin that now bears his name when he, with the help of his dog Friday, drove flocks of sheep inland to avoid being discovered. Authorities were finally able to capture Mackenzie, but struggled to take control of the sheep due to his highly intelligent dog. It is alleged Friday continued to drive the sheep without his master's control until finally being disabled by the authorities. On a sunny day, we drove from Christchurch to Lake Tekapo. It took about three hours. We came across some small towns on the way but we had no time to stop. When we arrived, we walked to the historic Church of the Good Shepherd. This small stone church is very unique. If you want to go inside, you must pay attention to the opening hours: Tuesday morning 9-8pm; Sunday 4pm-5pm. We arrived on Wednesday so we didn't get a chance to visit. Then we walked along The Tekapo Lake, the lake was calm, very blue, very beautiful! The Church and the Lake were such scenic spots that worth taking more photos. If you have plenty of travel time, or if you like stargazing, you can consider staying one night to participate in stargazing or soaking in hot springs for a fee. #nice lithle town #stargazing

Almost all of Tekapo’s restaurants are located in this area, so staying nearby makes meal times super convenient. I stayed at a lovely place, but it was a bit far from the restaurants — I had to walk around 6,000 steps round-trip just for dinner! ⚠️ Also important: this central area has streetlights, which makes walking back from stargazing at night much safer. Most areas in Tekapo are very dark at night, especially away from the main road. 🛍️ Souvenir Shopping The largest gift shop in Tekapo is Aotea Gifts — it’s your one-stop shop for postcards and stamps, and there’s a mailbox right at the entrance, which makes sending postcards super easy! New Zealand's Lake Tekapo and Mount Cook are must-visit destinations. During this trip to New Zealand, we stayed in Fairlie, a quiet and comfortable small town. It’s about a 30-minute drive to Lake Tekapo and two hours to Mount Cook. While the location isn’t the most convenient, it’s very affordable. 🌄 Lake Tekapo + Church of the Good Shepherd Our first stop at Lake Tekapo was the iconic Church of the Good Shepherd! This small stone church is located by the lake, with a backdrop of serene waters and distant mountains. The atmosphere is tranquil and romantic, and even with tourists around, it still feels sacred. It’s best to visit at sunrise or sunset when the lighting is stunning, making it perfect for photography! 🌌 Stargazing (Dark Sky Project) At night, we joined the Dark Sky Project to stargaze at the Mount John Observatory. The tour cost NZD 299, and we were excited to experience the world-class night sky. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t great, and it happened to be a full moon, which made the stars much dimmer. We could barely see anything. While the guides were professional, the experience didn’t feel worth the price. If you plan to join, make sure to check the weather and moon phase in advance to avoid full moon nights! 🥾 Mount Cook — Hooker Valley Track The next day, we headed to Mount Cook and hiked the popular Hooker Valley Track. The round trip takes about three hours, with flat and easy trails. Along the way, you’ll cross suspension bridges, see glacial streams, and enjoy breathtaking views of snow-capped mountains. At the end of the trail, you’ll reach Hooker Lake, complete with floating icebergs! The scenery is both stunning and therapeutic—highly recommended! 🍣 Mt Cook Alpine Salmon Shop After the hike, we stopped by the salmon shop near Lake Pukaki for some sashimi. The weather was perfect, and enjoying fresh, sweet salmon while gazing at the lake was such a treat! I recommend getting the small box, as the portion is just right and not overwhelming. The large box might feel a bit too much by the end. 💡 Tips: - Photography inside the church is not allowed, so please respect the local religious culture. - Check the weather and moon phase before stargazing to avoid disappointment. - Bring water, sunscreen, and a light jacket for hiking, as the weather can change quickly. - The salmon shop offers samples, so you can try before you buy. Summary: The lake, church, snow-capped mountains, hiking trails, and salmon delicacies made this trip’s highlights unforgettable. Although the stargazing didn’t meet expectations, we were still very satisfied. Next time, we’ll plan for moonless nights to catch the perfect Milky Way!

At night, a natural planetarium unfolds from the skylights of our rooms. We had lunch at a restaurant right in front of the lake. Eating while looking out at the clear sky and the milky blue lake is a healing experience that is enjoyed with all five senses. Afterwards, we took a stroll around the small town of Tekapo. The Church of the Good Shepherd and the lakeside scenery are even more beautiful than in the photos. We were worried about the weather at night, but miraculously the clouds cleared, and when we looked up, we saw a starry sky. We couldn't help but sigh at the Milky Way and the Southern Cross that spread across the lightless sky. We could also see the stars through the skylights of our hotel rooms, making for an unforgettable night. The next morning, we enjoyed a luxurious breakfast at the hotel and went to Mount Cook on a local tour. Unfortunately, we had to give up on trekking due to the weather, but it was worth spending some time learning about the history of glaciers and mountain culture at the visitor center. After that, we got back on the bus and headed to our next destination, Christchurch. Tekapo, where you can enjoy the starry sky, lake, and mountains even for just one night, is a relaxing spot that you definitely want to include in your South Island trip.
