6 Days in Beijing. Places that hit right in the feels.
My friend and I had our eyes on China for a long time, but we were a bit intimidated, so we decided to stick just to the capital and skip other cities.
And we didn't regret it at all!
We’re the type of travelers who love to just wander the streets and see where our feet take us✨ And Beijing has tons of spots to explore.
Just a heads-up, you definitely want to avoid China's national holiday weeks, which is why we planned our trip for April 24 to 30. The weather was absolutely gorgeous. Some folks arrive earlier to catch the cherry blossoms, but that wasn't really our goal.
In this post, I’ll just drop a quick list of the places we hit up, without going into too much detail.
Day 1. Arrival and the Temple of Heaven.
Exploring our neighborhood and the Temple of Heaven was plenty for us, especially since our main goal was just staying awake. It's an awesome complex with a beautiful park.
Day 2. Forbidden City, Jingshan Park, Wangfujing Street.
You could wander around for hours; if you want, you can even find a secluded spot in the Forbidden City—it’s massive! As for the shopping street, it’s best to hit it up in the late afternoon or early evening, since you’ll end up getting stuck there for a while, and walking around when it's all lit up is a total vibe. Also, if possible, scope out a dinner spot in advance—we were out roaming until almost 9:00 PM, only to find out that a lot of places close early. We ended up having to walk around hunting for food😅
Day 3. Gubei Water Town, Simatai Great Wall
We booked a tour on trip.com. There are definitely pros and cons to this one. The downside, of course, starts with being tied to the shuttle schedule—you can't leave Gubei before 7:00 PM. Also, Simatai is a pretty rugged, older section of the wall, so we didn't really get that romanticized vibe. For a first-timer, Mutianyu might be a better bet🧐 But we still have no regrets! Gubei is basically one giant photo op without the insane crowds🌺
Day 4. Lama Temple, Hutongs, Shopping Malls
This day was all about taking it easy, and it totally delivered. My only tip: pick out your malls in advance, because shopping can be a bit tricky if you aren't familiar with the local brands, and you won't find Zara and H&M just anywhere.
Day 5. Universal Studios.
Obviously, this was a dream come true✨ but make sure to properly pace yourself, because walking around in the heat with huge crowds of tourists is a whole quest on its own. If I had another chance to visit the park, I’d show up a bit later, around 10:00-11:00 AM, because with a fast pass, you can easily breeze through the popular spots. I highly recommend starting in the HP zone (naturally) and then, during the peak afternoon heat, ducking into the Panda zone—it has a roof over it and it's pleasantly humid. Also, instead of the Three Broomsticks, I recommend grabbing lunch at Mr. Ping's restaurant. Way fewer people, you aren't baking in an outdoor line, and the noodle portions are insanely huge and delicious. After a break like that, you’ll be totally recharged to tackle the rest of the park🌿
Day 6. Summer Palace and Imperial Banquet
The finale totally stole our ♥️
We hit up the Summer Palace in the morning and absolutely loved it: first a hike up the hill, then the cool shade of the forest, and finally a boat ride. Pure magic💫 I'm sure you could spend the whole day wandering around there, but we had a 4-hour route.
Next up was dinner, as promised, with royal honors. And it completely lived up to the hype! First, we toured the traditional cuisine museum, then we did the costume dress-up. Such an incredible experience🌺
The organization was top-notch: they sang and danced for us, and kept our tea and wine poured. We, on the other hand, literally didn’t have enough hands to clap, film, and eat all at once😄
I don't regret spending a single yuan on it. It’s an experience I'll remember for a lifetime💞
If you guys have any questions, I’ll be happy to go into more detail. After all, this is my very first post on the trip platform✨
