Aso travel guide and discussion

#itinerarycheck　#hotdiscussions I get motion sickness pretty easily, so I make sure I pack my little prevention kit, especially if I know I will be driven through mountain roads🏞️ 💊pharmaceutical medicine. I buy them in my local pharmacy in Japan, they work surprisingly well. 🌱ginger really helps! Also recommended for morning sickness, chemo patients etc. My favorite are the little bottle of sugar free ginger shots, but I've never really seen them outside of the US (less common in Europe, can't think of ever seeing any in Asia). A strong ginger tea in your reusable bottle is the 2nd best, 3rd being candied ginger you find in many Asian countries. I considered the tubed grated ginger we have in Japan, do not recommend! 🌲 minty balm: it can be with eucalyptus, mint, camphor... I rub it in my temples and under my nose 🌬️ mints 🫗 I prefer to avoid it, but coca cola is found in most places and does calm down motion sickness a bit. My other motion sickness prevention tips would be to be well rested and full. Seems counterintuitive, but you are a lot more likely to get motion sickness on an empty stomach🍔

📍Kusasenrigahama Address: Kusasenrigahama, Aso City, Kumamoto 💰Entry: Free (Kusasenri Parking: 500 yen for standard cars) Kusasenrigahama is a must-visit destination in Aso. This iconic scenic spot features vast grasslands sprawling across a volcanic crater formed roughly 30,000 years ago✨ Surrounded by majestic peaks, the landscape offers an incredible sense of freedom, making you feel like you've stepped into the vast wilderness of a foreign country. One thing I really wish I’d known beforehand, though, was just how crowded the parking gets. I visited during a three-day holiday weekend, and it was packed. It took nearly an hour just to get into the parking lot. While the facilities are great—with a well-kept lot, stylish cafes, and souvenir shops—the wait can definitely throw off your travel schedule...😥 ⚠️If you’re planning a visit on a weekend or during peak tourist season, I highly recommend giving yourself plenty of extra time.⚠️ That said, the breathtaking view waiting for you is absolutely worth the wait. Just keep an eye on your schedule and definitely go check it out!🧚

Experience one of the most breathtaking and spiritually significant viewpoints in Aso-Kuju National Park, Oita Prefecture: the "Mount Kuju Miyama-kirishima (Dwarf Azalea) Trail." This ancient natural wonder features a vibrant pink floral carpet atop volcanic peaks, a sight believed to bring good luck as the Japanese welcome the start of summer. The atmosphere here is truly soul-soothing. The sacred grounds are beautifully integrated with lush greenery and classic wooden architecture, offering a refreshing breeze that perfectly recharges the mind and body. · The Masterpiece The highlight of this trek is the "natural stone path encircling the main shrine," which meanders through ancient woods along protective walls. For those looking for the perfect photo, try a low-angle shot gazing through the dense, purple-pink Miyama-kirishima blossoms that blanket the hillsides. The view of the winding ridges against the backdrop of distant peaks is simply majestic, especially in the golden natural light. Don't forget to check out the charming traditional hand-washing basins! · Getting There Take a train to JR Bungo-Nakamura or JR Aso Station, then catch a bus or drive to the Chojabaru or Makinoto Pass trailheads. From there, it's a few hours' hike up the mountain paths to reach this floral paradise. The expansive shrine area is free to visit and offers stunning views under clear skies. (Pro tip: You can enjoy "pure mountain spring water" and "freshly toasted dango" nearby to experience authentic local flavors all year round!) · Opening Hours and Admission The mountain trails and viewpoints are accessible 24 hours a day (though daytime hiking is recommended for safety). The peak blooming season for the azaleas is from late May to mid-June each year. Entry to the ridges and the entire national park area is free of charge. · What to Wear Sturdy hiking boots or sneakers with good grip are essential for the steep, rocky trails and stone stairs. For clothing, a windbreaker and sun hat are recommended. Choosing minimalist or light colors like white, cream, or denim will help you look elegant and stand out against the traditional wooden structures and torii gates in your photos.

Catching autumn foliage at its absolute peak is a beautiful gamble where nature holds all the cards. I took these photos during my recent trip to Kyushu—from the grounds of Kumamoto Castle to the sweeping views of Aso-Kuju—where I realized just how much catching the "perfect" moment depends on luck. Even with professional trackers and careful planning, I ended up just missing the true peak window. But there’s a deeper layer to the gamble now: climate change is making the seasonal calendar entirely unpredictable. Rising global temperatures and erratic weather patterns are actively disrupting traditional foliage timelines. Peak colors are arriving later, windows are shrinking, and a sudden heatwave or unexpected storm can strip the canopy before it ever fully turns. Missing the peak by just a few days used to be simple bad luck; now, it's a reminder of a changing climate. Still, as these views show, nature’s "almost there" is still an absolute masterpiece. 🍁✨ #fallcolors

✨ Kumamoto is a charming city on Japan's Kyushu Island that perfectly blends historical allure, breathtaking nature, and the authentic Japanese way of life. It’s the ideal destination for those seeking a peaceful escape while capturing stunning memories. 🇯🇵💚 🏯 A must-visit landmark, Kumamoto Castle showcases majestic ancient architecture with its massive stone walls and elegant dark-tiled roofs. The grounds are particularly breathtaking during the cherry blossom season. 🌿 Suizenji Jojuen Garden offers a serene retreat with its traditional design, crystal-clear ponds, miniature hills, and meticulously manicured trees. It’s a perfect spot for a relaxing stroll and beautiful photography. 🐻 You can’t leave without meeting Kumamon! Japan’s beloved rosy-cheeked black bear mascot is everywhere. Make sure to snap a photo and pick up some adorable souvenirs. ⛰️ For nature lovers, head out to Mount Aso to witness vast grasslands, active volcanic landscapes, and awe-inspiring vistas. It offers a side of Kumamoto that feels worlds away from the city. 🍜 Foodies shouldn't miss the local Kumamoto Ramen, famous for its rich tonkotsu broth topped with roasted garlic oil. For the adventurous, try basashi (horse meat), a renowned local delicacy. 💚 From historic castles and Zen gardens to volcanic wonders and savory eats, Kumamoto has it all. If you’re planning a Kyushu itinerary, be sure to include this city—you’ll discover a side of Japan that is as warm as it is unforgettable. 📸✨

Planning a trip to Kumamoto? Don’t just come for Kumamoto Castle and Mount Aso — this region has some seriously underrated local food! 🇯🇵✨ From raw horse meat sashimi to rich pork ramen and sweet Japanese desserts, here’s what I’d put on my food bucket list. 🥩 1. Basashi — Japanese Horse Meat Sashimi This is probably Kumamoto’s most famous local specialty! Thinly sliced raw horse meat is served with soy sauce, ginger and garlic. It has a delicate flavor and a texture that many people compare to lean beef. 🐴 It’s definitely an adventurous food experience, so make sure you choose a reputable restaurant. 🍜 2. Kumamoto Ramen A must-try for ramen lovers! Unlike some lighter ramen styles, Kumamoto ramen is known for its rich pork-bone broth, garlic chips and fragrant black garlic oil called mayu. The result is deeply savory, aromatic and comforting. 🥢 3. Taipien — A Unique Kumamoto Noodle Soup This local favorite features glass noodles, vegetables, seafood and sometimes pork or a fried egg in a light, flavorful broth. It’s a great option if you want something delicious but less heavy than tonkotsu ramen. 🍖 4. Akaushi Beef — Kumamoto’s Famous Red Cattle If you love Japanese beef, look for Aso Akaushi. This local red cattle breed is prized for its beefy flavor and balanced fat. Try it as a steak, a rice bowl or Akaushi-don topped with a soft egg! 🍡 5. Ikinari Dango — A Sweet Local Snack A traditional Kumamoto treat made with sweet potato and sweet red bean paste wrapped in a soft wheat-flour dough and steamed. It’s simple, filling and perfect for a snack while exploring the city. 🍵 6. Karashi Renkon — Spicy Lotus Root One of Kumamoto’s most distinctive specialties! Lotus root is filled with a mustard-miso mixture, coated in batter and deep-fried. It has a crunchy texture with a surprisingly spicy kick. 🍊 7. Dekopon — Sweet Japanese Citrus Kumamoto is famous for its delicious dekopon citrus, known for its distinctive shape and sweet, juicy flesh. If you’re visiting during the right season, look for fresh fruit, desserts or citrus juice made with it. #must-tryfood

Kikuchi Valley is a lush natural oasis located in the northwestern part of the Aso caldera's outer rim in Kikuchi City, Kumamoto. The headwaters of the Kikuchi River flow with stunningly transparent water, creating a breathtaking landscape of diverse waterfalls, gentle rapids, and dense forests. A popular retreat for staying cool in the summer, the valley also transforms into a premier destination for autumn foliage as the trees burst into vibrant color. It is one of Kumamoto's most iconic spots, offering a peaceful stroll through the changing beauty of the four seasons. 5026 Hara, Kikuchi City, Kumamoto 861-1441

『Pon de Cherry』 Aso City, Kumamoto Prefecture 5-minute drive or 24-minute walk from JR Uchimaki Station I’ve wanted to visit this adorable cafe for so long, and I finally made it! ❁⃘*.ﾟ ✤ Shine Muscat Parfait The two types of ice cream were absolutely divine ✨️ One was cream cheese and salted caramel, and the other was a blend of yogurt, mascarpone, and La France pear ♡ The Shine Muscats were incredibly sweet, and with the crunchy vanilla pie and almond pudding, I was sighing "so delicious" with every single bite! ♡ The squirrel and capybara (or rabbit?) cookies were also so cute 🐿 The interior was incredibly cute! If you're visiting Kumamoto, one place you absolutely must visit is Kusasenrigahama 🌿⛰️ It's one of Aso's representative tourist spots, and the scenery created by the vast grasslands and the Aso mountains is breathtakingly beautiful, like a painting. Because its appearance changes dramatically depending on the season and weather, you can experience a different charm each time you visit. The biggest attraction of Kusasenrigahama is the vast grassland that seems to stretch on forever. There's a large pond in the center, and the reflection of the surrounding mountains and sky on the water's surface is very impressive. On a sunny day, the contrast between the blue sky and the green grassland is beautiful, and even just taking a photo will give you a picture that truly captures the essence of Kumamoto and Aso 📸 Furthermore, you can also see horses grazing in Kusasenrigahama 🐎. The sight of horses slowly walking across the wide grassland is a unique Aso scene that you rarely see in the city. Horse riding experiences are also available, allowing you to experience Aso's nature even more intimately by actually riding a horse across the grassland. When visiting Kusasenri, be sure to pay attention to the surrounding scenery. Due to its high altitude, the observation deck offers panoramic views of the majestic Aso mountains. Especially on clear days, you can see far into the distance, truly appreciating the vast scale of nature. The atmosphere changes with the seasons; from spring to summer, it's enveloped in vibrant green, and in autumn, the grassland gradually changes color. In winter, snow can accumulate, creating a completely different, fantastical landscape. Furthermore, there are restaurants and rest areas around Kusasenri, making it a recommended stop during your Aso sightseeing. Enjoying Aso's local specialties while admiring the magnificent scenery is one of the pleasures of your trip. While Kumamoto is often associated with Kumamoto Castle and the city center, a short trip will reveal such magnificent nature. The vast grassland, so vast that it feels like "nothing is there," is precisely what makes Kusasenri so appealing—it allows you to forget your daily worries and relax. When you come to Kumamoto, be sure to visit Kusasenri and experience the magnificent nature of Aso for yourself 🌿🐎 Once you visit, you'll surely want to return in a different season. #Kumamoto #Aso #Kusasenri #Kusasenrigahama #AsoTourism #KumamotoTourism #KumamotoTravel #AsoTravel #KyushuTravel #StunningView #ScenicSpot #Nature #TravelLovers

📍Kumamoto · Aso Starting from Kumamoto, we headed straight into the Aso highlands. Along the way, we passed vast grasslands and galloping horses before finally reaching the Mt. Aso crater to witness the steaming volcanic landscape firsthand. Before heading back, we made a special stop at Aso Shrine and happened to catch some vintage trains at the station, a perfect end to this journey through nature and history. 🌋 Morning | Mt. Aso Crater – Feeling the Earth’s Pulse Setting off from downtown Kumamoto early in the morning, we made our way to the Mt. Aso crater. The drive offers expansive views of rolling grasslands and distant peaks; on clear days, you can see the distinct silhouettes of the Aso Five Peaks. Upon arriving at the crater, the air is thick with the scent of sulfur. Viewing platforms and shelters line the edge. Looking down from the railings, the milky-blue volcanic lake and the constant plumes of white smoke are a breathtaking sight. Note: Access to the crater depends on daily gas concentrations and weather conditions; be sure to check official announcements before you go. 🐴 Noon | Kusasenri – Vast Prairies and Grazing Horses After leaving the crater, head to Kusasenri. This sprawling grassland offers incredible vistas with lush greenery and undulating hills in the distance, where horses graze peacefully. Many visitors try horseback riding here or simply stroll along the trails for photos. Next to the prairie, there are restaurants and rest areas where you can enjoy local dairy products and light meals. A one-hour stay is recommended to fully soak in the openness and tranquility of Aso. ⛩️ Afternoon | Aso Shrine – The 2,000-Year-Old Mother Shrine Next, head over to Aso Shrine. With a history spanning over two millennia, this is the head shrine for approximately 450 Aso shrines across Japan and serves as the Ichinomiya (first shrine) of Higo Province. The grounds are shaded by towering ancient trees, creating a solemn atmosphere. Pass through the massive stone Torii gate and walk down the approach lined with tall cedars and stone lanterns. The shrine buildings are crafted from wood with elegant cypress bark roofs. The grounds also feature sacred trees like the "Takasago Pine" and "Couple Pine," believed to bring good fortune in relationships and family harmony. Note: Aso Shrine was damaged in the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake. Some structures are still undergoing restoration, so follow on-site signs for tour routes and accessible areas. A 40-minute visit is suggested. 🚂 Evening | Retro Trains – Red and Yellow Rail Scenery On the way back, we encountered some vintage trains at the station. One was a red diesel train idling by the platform, and the other was a yellow JR Kyushu train showing a bit of age, exuding a strong sense of nostalgia. Watching the trains pull into the station against a backdrop of blue sky and white clouds feels like a scene from a movie. Even if you aren't driving, taking the local railway is a fantastic way to see the rural landscapes and mountain views of the Aso region. 🗺️ One-Day Itinerary Idea Mt. Aso Crater (Morning) → Kusasenri (Noon) → Aso Shrine (Afternoon) → Retro Trains & Station Stroll (Evening) 💡 Practical Tips · Access to the Mt. Aso crater depends on gas levels; always check the official website before heading out. · Portions of Aso Shrine are still under restoration; verify accessible areas beforehand. · Mountain weather is unpredictable; bring a light jacket and rain gear. · It gets windy at Kusasenri; even in summer, a windbreaker is recommended. · If using the local railway, double-check schedules and transfer times in advance.

If you've been to Japan a few times and feel like you know the country quite well, I think you should try going south. Kyushu gave me a very different feeling about Japan. The first time I saw pictures of Takachiho Gorge, I had a feeling: I absolutely had to go there. And when I actually set foot in Kyushu, I realized that the most attractive thing about this place wasn't just the scenery. It was the feeling of a more liberal, open Japan, less constrained by familiar rules. The pace of life was also more relaxed. And the nature… was truly breathtaking. Kyushu is a geological area with many active volcanoes, so it has mountain ranges, gorges, lakes, hot springs, and magnificent landscapes created by millions of years of Earth's movement. Mount Aso (Kumamoto Prefecture) and Sakurajima (Kagoshima Prefecture) are two of Japan's most active volcanoes. Thanks to its intense volcanic and geothermal activity, Kyushu also accounts for approximately 35% of Japan's total hot spring (onsen) sources, with famous hot spring towns like Beppu and Yufuin. Much of the island is covered by hills and giant caldera formations created after ancient eruptions. In particular, it's a land steeped in Japanese mythology. There are places where you can not only admire the scenery but also feel like you're stepping into an ancient tale. Initially, I planned to use the Seishun 18 Kippu pass to explore Kyushu by local trains, traveling through different regions. However, after researching, I discovered that the most beautiful places in Kyushu are often not located near train stations or with convenient public transportation. The Takachiho Gorge, mountainous areas, valleys, and volcanic landscapes are often located deep within nature, requiring additional local buses or taxis for transportation, making it quite complicated. Therefore, I chose a day tour with private transportation. If you're looking for a more unique Japan than Kyoto, Tokyo, or Osaka, try Kyushu. You might discover a Japan you've never known before.

This epic Kyushu roadie went down in autumn 2022—and the recent earthquake in Kyushu totally brought back all those travel feels. Escape the hustle and bustle of the city, and enjoy a luxurious time surrounded by sunlight filtering through the trees🌳✨ 〜〜〜 Just an 8-minute drive from Kumamoto Airport🚗✨ I visited the "boketto" forest, a lush, greenery-filled nature complex in Nishihara Village, Aso! #itinerarycheck The forecast showed heavy rain every day before my trip, so as a planner type, I just decided to "lie flat" and not make any plans. Unexpectedly, the journey was smooth and joyful! If you also prefer a relaxed travel style without rushing or overpacking, save this 5-day, 4-night easygoing Fukuoka guide. Day 1: Arrived at Fukuoka Airport in the afternoon, which is very close to the city center. First, dropped off luggage at the hotel, then visited Canal City where shopping is super convenient. Outdoor enthusiasts can also grab gear at ALPEN. In the evening, I took the "Nakagawa Water Bus," the 6:30 pm Chuo line. The sunset view was fantastic! You can walk from the pier to the main branch of Ichiran Ramen, and the famous Nakagawa Yatai stalls are right next door. Day 2: Spent the whole day at "Uminonakamichi." In the morning, visited the Marine World to see dolphin and sea lion shows, plus super cute otter and penguin feeding sessions. Lunch was at a restaurant inside the park, eating while watching the dolphins swim by. In the afternoon, headed to Seaside Park and rented a bike to ride around at a leisurely pace. There are trampolines, slides, water play, cute little animals, and stunningly clear, glass-like sea water. ° Day 3: Took the train to "Dazaifu." The atmosphere at Tenmangu Shrine was wonderful. Touched the sacred ox, drew a fortune slip, and bought an omamori-it felt very ceremonial. The plum blossom mochi was sweet, soft, and delicious. The Starbucks designed by Kengo Kuma is also a must-visit spot. On the way back, I browsed Yodobashi Camera next to Hakata Station. The 3rd-floor outdoor section has a full range of brands, including Mammut, Arc'teryx, Pata... The Lopia supermarket on the 4th floor is highly recommended! Although it's cash-only, the deals are amazing! A tray of uni was only 70 yen, a huge pizza for just over 20 yen, and a huge selection of sashimi, sushi, and fried foods... Day 4: Spontaneously signed up for a one-day Kyushu tour. Luckily, I got to see Mt. Aso and bought an adorable Kumamon bear made from volcanic ash. At Kusasenri, I went horseback riding. The colored statues at Kumanoza Shrine made me feel like I'd stepped into an anime world. Soaking in the Kurokawa Onsen was incredibly relaxing... and to top it all off, a bottle of cold milk. Perfect. · Day 5: On my last morning, I rushed to "Ohori Park" to take a photo with Yayoi Kusama's giant pumpkin. I happened to catch the Hello Kitty 50th-anniversary exhibition and was so happy to buy four long-legged Kitty dolls. I also snagged a Ball&Chain bag at the airport. A very satisfied trip home. · tips: Trip Planning: Use "Yuanzhou Lüji" to automatically plan routes and schedules. It's perfect for lazy people and is brain-free~ Language Communication: I recommend "KuliKuli" for translation; its accuracy is high! When faced with an all-Japanese menu, ordering is completely stress-free. Transport Deals: Using a Visa card to pay for the Fukuoka subway is super cost-effective! Until 9/23, the maximum daily charge is only 540 yen. #fukuokaparentchildtripip#fukuoka#circulartravelpath #nichetraveldestinationsons #japantravelguide #japaneseapp#1minutetosortouttravelplanningelplanning #jpeopletravelguide #treasureapp #coolie #fukuokatravel #wheretogoduringthenationaldtionald... #japanparentchildtour#5hflightescape

Mount Aso, located in Kumamoto Prefecture on Japan’s Kyushu Island, is one of the world’s largest active volcanic calderas and the centre of Aso-Kuju National Park. This massive volcanic basin stretches roughly 18 kilometres across, ringed by five volcanic peaks collectively known as the Aso Five Mountains. Among them, Mount Nakadake remains active, regularly releasing volcanic fumes and drawing visitors eager to witness raw geological power, with designated observation decks to view the crater safely when eruption alerts permit. Kusasenri, widely called New Kusasenri (New Kusasenri / ニュー草千里), is the iconic rolling grassland plain on the northern foot of Mount Eboshi, part of the Aso volcanic massif. Its vast, undulating green meadows stretch out against volcanic mountain backdrops, creating a sweeping pastoral landscape famous across Japan. The New Kusasenri Visitor Centre shown in your photo serves as the key hub for this area, home to the well-loved Aso Milk Factory, which sells fresh local dairy products, ice cream and handmade treats sourced from surrounding ranches. The facility features a large paid car park, a bus terminal for regional sightseeing coaches, gift shops, casual dining and rest amenities, making it the perfect rest stop for self-drivers and tour groups alike. Visitors can enjoy horse riding across the grassland, panoramic walking trails and seasonal scenery: vivid green in summer, golden amber in autumn and occasionally dusted with light snow in winter. As the most accessible gateway to experience both the dramatic volcanic geology and gentle rural grasslands of Aso, Kusasenri remains an indispensable highlight of any Kyushu itinerary, balancing rugged natural wonder with convenient tourist infrastructure. #mountaso #kusasenri #kumamoto #kyushu
