#Halloween2023 The Panama Canal is an 82-kilometer-long artificial waterway that connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and separates North and South America. The canal crosses the Isthmus of Panama and is a passage for maritime trade. The United States took over the project on May 4, 1904, and the canal opened on August 15, 1914. The United States continued to control the canal and the area surrounding the Panama Canal until the 1977 Torrijos-Carter Treaty provided for its transfer to Panama. After a period of joint U.S.-Panamanian control, the canal was taken over by the Panamanian government in 1999. It is now managed and operated by the government-owned Panama Canal Authority. Canal locks at either end raise ships into Gatun Lake, an artificial lake designed to reduce the amount of excavation required for the canal, 26 meters above sea level, and then lower the ships at the other end. The original lock was 33.5 metres wide. A third, wider lock channel was constructed between September 2007 and May 2016. The expanded waterway began commercial operations on June 26, 2016. The new locks will allow larger neo-Panamax vessels to transit. All large ships entering the lift lock channel shut down their engines, making the ship lose power, and then rely entirely on tractors to pass through the narrow lift channel. I stopped off in Panama on a layover. Since I was there, I took a half-day layover to enjoy the Panama Strait and the famous coffee 🇵🇦☕️ First up was the Panama Strait! There are morning and afternoon sessions, and if you go in the afternoon, it's recommended to go around 2pm to see the ships passing by! You can see the lock-type strait with English explanations. As I listened to the structure and history of the strait, I was deeply moved by the fact that this strait has a great impact on shipping around the world. I stayed there for about three hours and then went to the old town called Casco Viejo! Visiting the Panama Canal has always been my dream. Before going, it's crucial to check the ship schedule, meaning you need to know when ships will pass through. It's not like ships are passing through 24 hours a day. On the day I went, ships were scheduled to pass after 2 PM. In the morning, I visited the old town, which features typical Spanish colonial architecture. The security used to be average, but now there are police everywhere, so it seems to have improved. At noon, you can walk through Chinatown from the old town to a place similar to a food court to eat seafood. It's reasonably priced. However, it's worth noting that I read online that someone had their phone stolen on this route, so be mindful of your safety. Taking a taxi to the Panama Canal viewing area, I had to wait in a long line to buy tickets. To get a good spot to watch the ships, I arrived early. The ticket office told me there was still some time before the ships would pass, so they suggested I watch a documentary about the Panama Canal in the theater. The documentary was well-made, explaining the history and significance of the canal. After the screening, I rushed to get a good spot. It was over 30 degrees Celsius, and everyone was waiting under the sun. After a long wait, a ship finally arrived. The broadcast introduced the ship in both Spanish and English, including its name (some ships have their own names), type, cargo, origin, destination, shipping company, and country of origin. If the ship is a regular visitor, they also mention how many times it passes through each year. Every time I heard the enthusiastic introduction, I thought about the millions of dollars in toll fees each ship pays, not to mention the high entrance fees paid by tourists daily. The coffee had a refreshing taste, perfect for drinking black. The most interesting part was when the restaurant staff heard I was from Hong Kong; several of them came to chat with me. They said they rarely see East Asian tourists, as most visitors come by cruise ship and leave after a quick look, without sitting down for a meal. The chef even came out to talk to me, asking if I was used to the food. Although there are taxi apps here, taxis usually take a long time to arrive, so be sure to plan accordingly.
