Nearby is Tianmen Mountain (Tianmenshan - Heaven's Gate) with its famous 999-step staircase and the Glass Bridge over the Grand Canyon. Zhangjiajie City is located at the foot of Tianmen Mountain, while the Avatar Mountain Park and the Glass Bridge are located closer to Wulingyuan Village. How to get to Zhangjiajie: 1) By plane (Zhangjiajie Hehua Domestic Airport DYG). 2) By high-speed train to the west station (张家界西站 Zhangjiajie Xi) + bus #17 or taxi to the city center. 3) By regular train to the station (张家界站 Zhangjiajie). How to get to Wulingyuan Village (武陵源, Wǔlíng Yuán): Take a bus from Zhangjiajie Bus Station (Guanli Street, next to the train station) or taxi. I arrived by train from Beijing (with a transfer in Changsha) the night before and checked into a hotel near the bottom station of the Tianmen Cable Car. Day 1: Tianmen (Heaven's Gate). There are two cable cars that take you up and down. Advance booking is required (via WeChat or Alipay), as tickets may not be available on the day. I took the Express Cableway (reached by bus from the bottom station of the main cable car), then climbed all 999 steps to Heaven's Gate and continued along the mountain with breathtaking views! I returned to the city via the main Tianmen Mountain Cableway (by the way, it's one of the longest high-altitude cableways in the world, listed in the Guinness Book of World Records, at 7.5 km long!). Day 2: Avatar Mountains. In the morning, I checked into a cozy hotel in Wulingyuan (about a 40-minute bus ride) and set out to conquer Avatar Mountain. Climbing the stone steps requires some stamina! My friends and I walked until sunset, but I wouldn't recommend it if you don't speak fluent Chinese. To get down the mountain, we had to call the shuttle buses twice and explain (in Chinese) which stations we were at. They also opened the Bailong Elevator (the highest outdoor elevator) for us, but it was pitch black outside, so we couldn't see a thing. 😁 Day 3: Grand Canyon and Glass Bridge. I took a bus from Wulingyuan Bus Station (at the intersection of Weiyiang Road and Guihua Road) to the transfer stop, then took a bus to the tourist center. I walked along the narrow path along the cliff (via ferrata), strolled across the Glass Bridge, and rode a zip line! The glass bridge is 430 meters long and is located at a height of 300 meters. The canyon is right there and was included in a single ticket. This is a picturesque place with waterfalls and boat rides along the river. You should allocate at least an hour just for the canyon, as it is long and includes two boat crossings. The nature here is very beautiful, and if it's not peak season, there are few people around. I walked almost alone in early August. In summer, it's also fresh and pleasant to walk here when it's not too hot. Allocate at least 4 hours for the glass bridge and canyon. Our comprehensive ticket included a zipline. However, when we approached it, there was a long queue. We were informed that the wait would be at least 2 hours, so unfortunately, we didn't wait. It's also important to note that the ticket includes elevator rides, but only once.

Adrenaline junkies should consider walking across the Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge, suspended 300 meters above the canyon. At 430 meters long, it was the highest and longest glass bridge in the world. The transparent floor offers an indescribable experience. An equally impressive area is Yuanjiajie, home to the cliffs that inspired the creators of Avatar. Here, you should see the "First Bridge Under Heaven" and ride the Bailong Elevator, the tallest outdoor elevator in the world. For those who don't have as much time as we did to explore the attractions of Zhangjiajie, here's a packed 3.5-day itinerary that allowed us to see a lot. Day 1: We stayed at a hotel located right in the 72 Wonder Building (a massive futuristic and beautiful building in Chinese style with lighting and shows). It was very close to the train station and not far from the long cable car to Tianmen National Park (or the 'Hole in the Rock'), as we planned to visit it in the morning. In the morning, we called a taxi. Taxis there are very cheap! We headed to the longest cable car. We bought tickets for Tianmen on Trip.com, Route A, to avoid climbing the 999 steps on foot. Make sure to book at least a couple of days in advance to secure this route, as it sells out quickly. We chose an entry time of 11-12. There will be a queue for the cable car; we waited about 40 minutes before finally boarding a cabin. It takes about 5 hours to complete the entire route in this national park. Be sure to visit the temple complex, which is large and beautiful, and of course, the 'Hole in the Rock.' In the evening, you can attend the Fox Fairy show. Tickets for it can also be purchased on Trip.com, but we decided to return to the hotel and bought entry tickets to the 72 Wonder Building complex (around 1000 rubles per person for an evening ticket, also purchased on Trip.com). The ticket is valid for 3 days! You can visit the complex for 3 days. Be sure to stop by the information desk and take a photo of the show schedule from the staff. Mini-performances and shows are held constantly in different locations. The complex also has various cafes, a museum, an exhibition, and other entertainment options. My favorite large-scale show with a storyline starts around 8:00 PM. The schedule may change, so take a photo at the information desk near the ticket counters. There is also a paid show program in a separate hall (15 yuan per person), which includes a cup of tea and performances. Out of curiosity, we attended it but were disappointed. 😁 Nothing particularly interesting. So, I wouldn't recommend it. The complex is open until 11:00 PM, but cafes start closing around 10:00-10:30 PM. Afterward, we simply returned to our hotel, which was very close and convenient. Day 2: In the morning, after breakfast, we took a taxi to Wulingyuan village and checked into a new hotel near the bus station and the entrance to the 'Avatar Mountains' (Zhangjiajie National Forest Park). Our room was ready, so we could leave our belongings there. Today, we headed to the Glass Bridge and Grand Canyon. You can get there by bus from the bus station (about 12-13 yuan per person) or by taxi. We bought tickets at the reception, but they are also available on Trip.com. We opted for the full package, including all lifts and attractions: zip line, slide, hot air balloons, etc. The zip line was the most worthwhile attraction. The Glass Bridge and Canyon don't take much time, about 3 hours. The Glass Bridge is no longer as transparent as it used to be, with scratches all over, so don't expect a 'WOW' effect. After the canyon, you can visit the Yellow Dragon Cave, which is nearby and on the way back to the village. We didn't go; instead, we took a bus back to Wulingyuan. I wouldn't call it a village; it's more like a small town with plenty of cafes to suit any taste. We had dinner and went to bed early, as we had to wake up early the next morning to explore the 'Avatar Mountains' (Zhangjiajie National Forest Park). Note: The movie Avatar wasn't filmed there; the mountain landscapes were more of an inspiration. Day 3: We bought tickets for the earliest entry (West Entrance) because it takes a lot of time to explore. I added a screenshot of the map to the post. It was a bit foggy, which made it even more epic. If you have more days to spare, you can visit the reserve for 4 consecutive days with the ticket. There's always a risk of bad weather! The transportation system in the mountains is very advanced! Buses constantly run from point to point. However, the distances are significant. The most popular spots are marked with stars. Choose 4-5 key points for yourself. Maps are sometimes available at the hotel reception (we had them!). You can ask at the reception and mention you have only one day. They will highlight the best spots for you. Don't worry about food and drinks: there are various cafes, coffee shops, and even a McDonald's in the mountains! We decided to descend the mountains on foot and saw monkeys along the way. The reception staff marked a big cross on the map for the staircase descent, saying it would take a long time, but we decided to go for it anyway. 😁 Afterward, we returned to the hotel. You can attend a show in the village, but we were very tired. The next day, we had a train to catch. If you take an evening train, you can visit the 'Avatar Mountains' once more. That's our itinerary. We left the city happy and satisfied! We loved everything, but the 'Avatar Mountains' were our favorite. Where else can you see something like this?

Believe it or not, many travelers to Zhangjiajie, including myself, often have a misconception. I thought all the attractions, like the glass bridge and the mountains seen in pictures, were close to each other. But I was wrong. The attractions are actually almost 100 kilometers apart. When I visited, I mistakenly thought I was going to see the iconic stone mountains from the advertisements. However, upon arrival, I realized this place is more of an activity-based tourist spot. You pay an entrance fee to walk on the glass bridge and enjoy a slide down the mountain. Overall, the activities here are decent, but don't expect to find scenic stone mountain views. This location is about a two-hour drive from the city. When I visited, it wasn't very crowded, but one downside is the lack of dining options inside. There are only 2-3 small restaurants near the entrance. So, if you're looking for a place to enjoy stone mountain views, this is not the place for you.

So, plan on a full day for exploring. Glass Bridge. It's located in a place called the Grand Canyon. After the glass bridge, you'll have a walk through the canyon. It will take about two hours. #zhangjiajie We decided to go to the Grand Canyon, a famous landmark near Zhangjiajie, where the famous glass bridge is located. Upon arrival, we were a little disappointed, as the glass itself was badly scratched and there was a strong glare from the sky. In reality, the glass doesn't have a transparent effect. We then descended into the canyon itself, thinking we'd stroll around and relax. This didn't happen, as there were huge crowds of Chinese tourists there. The canyon turned out to be more of a hectic walk through a crowd of tourists than a stroll. In my opinion, this attraction is worth skipping.

Here is some guidance for visiting the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon and Yellow Dragon Cave in one day. 🌅 I recommend staying within Wulingyuan. We started our day at around 8am, grabbing some cheap, local breakfast from one of the numerous food options nearby (5-10 yuan per person, plus some extra to bring for lunch). You can then get a taxi for around 40-50 yuan from Wulingyuan to the entrance of Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon (which works out cheaper than getting the bus for a family of four). 💵 Adult ticket prices: 289 yuan Student prices: 178 yuan If you are a student, you will need photo ID (eg passport), your student ID and a document which proves you are studying at a bachelors level (can be online). These ticket prices include the glass bridge, VR experience, zip line (or elevators depending on what route you take), slideway, and 2 boat rides. Outwith this you can pay for other activities including bungee jumping (1999 yuan) and rock climbing (45 yuan). 🏔️Once tickets are bought, you can make your way along the Glass Bridge, wearing the provided shoe covers. On the other side there is a restaurant and the option for rock climbing. The option for bungee jumping takes place on the bridge. 🎈Next there is a walk along the cliff side and then a short VR experience that simulates a hot air balloon ride around the canyon. 🚶🏻♀️From here, there is either the option to zip line across the canyon and then the slideway to reach the other side, or if that isn’t for you, you can take a series of elevators and a few more walks. The meeting point of these two routes is the Rainbow Lake. 🛥️There is then a short boat cruise along the lake at the base of the canyon. Following this, a 40-50 minute walk to take in the views of the canyon, and through a short cave, before another cruise to reach the end of the Grand Canyon Experience. 🐉This takes you to around 4pm. Staff explained it was due to low usage. ❌ Limited food options in the restaurant, and prices are relatively high. ❌ Facilities show signs of aging, and the rooms are smaller than expected. ❌ Breakfast was disappointing with average taste. ⭕️ The location is remote, requiring a longer drive to major attractions.
