Archaeological Museum of Chania - Crete

The mere sight of this beautifully restored 16th century Venetian church is a good reason to visit and see the fine collection of artefacts dating from the Neolithic period to Roman domination. Notice the late Minoan sarcophagi and the large glass case with a whole herd of clay bulls (used to worship Poseidon). Other items of particular interest include Roman floor mosaics, Hellenistic gold jewelry, Linear A and Linear B clay tablets, and a marble sculpture of the Roman Emperor Hadrian. Loutro is a small fishing village located in southern Crete (Chania Prefecture) time has forgotten. It took its name from the baths found there (loutro means bath). It is believed that it was the side of the ancient city of Phoenix and also was the port of ancient Anopolis. There are two ways to reach Loutro, by boat or on foot via Anopolis. However, we would not recommend the second one unless you are an experienced hiker. In reality Loutro is accessible only from the sea, which is why it has escaped the environmental and cultural deterioration brought by rampant touristic growth. There are no big hotels here, no crowded streets, no cars. Only a handful of residents along with a relatively small number of visitors enjoying the sun, the sea and the “freedom of seclusion”. The village is so small you can actually walk from one side to the other in 5 minutes or less. Still, you will not miss on anything; there are markets, taverns, restaurants, coffee shops and of course several hotels and rooms to let. Doing nothing is the best thing to do here. Most hotel rooms have balconies facing the bay, offering you the opportunity to get lost in the hypnotic view - yes, this is the peak of your day. Other than that, make sure to enjoy the food and rent a small boat to visit the marvelous beaches in the broader area especially Marmara and Glyka Nera. The waters are mythical. Moreover, there are several nice walks in the area, if you are up to a hike. You can explore the Gorge of Aradena, Imvros Gorge and of course the great Samaria Gorge. You can also climb the road up to Anopolis where you can admire the magnificent views towards the bay. There are also some very nice buildings to see, such as the Government House that was used in 1821 (during the Greek Revolution) and the Byzantine church of the Archangel Michael. #mynovgetaway #mynovgetaway

The iguana beach is located on the island of Crete in Greece. We walked a bit though the uninhabited areas of the island near the sea to reach it. The water was very calm and the beach was quite in early May. We saw so many good views for our 2-3km short walk to the beach located not far from the town of Chania. #beach #aegeansea #happynewyear

This Mediterranean paradise features good views and amazing architecture in Venetian style. It is different even than other cities on this island so it worth a visit. 👍️Recommended reason: Chania is a real old town, older than Rome, with the ancient name Kydonia, dating back to the Minoan period 5,000 years ago. It is said that this ancient city was mentioned in the Homeric epics. In an inconspicuous corner of the old town, near the city wall, there is an excavated site where clay tablets with Linear B script from the Cretan civilization 2,500 years ago were unearthed. This is the same period as our oracle bone script, and its long history is awe-inspiring. Today, the main buildings in the old town date back to the 13th century Venetian rule. Everyone says the old town is very beautiful, and it lives up to its reputation. Under more than 400 years of Venetian rule, the atmosphere here is very similar to that of an ancient Italian city. What is even more remarkable is that there is a huge semicircular blue bay, with clear water lapping against the shore, surrounded by colorful buildings of varying heights, and in the distance, a pretty lighthouse stands on the ancient seawall, looking out over the blue Mediterranean Sea to the north. To the south, beyond the rooftops, is the backbone of Crete, Mount Ida, with its clear atmosphere pouring down from the blue sky, meeting the mountains, and leaving the snow on the mountain tops glistening. The old town is full of the flavor of southern France, with winding streets, colorful colors, and all kinds of lovely shops and restaurants, and you can see the sea from time to time. 📅Travel tips: Stay in the old town for 3–5 days to truly enjoy its beauty. 🏨Accommodation tips: Homestay 💗Other tips: The best place to watch the sunset is the northeast coastline outside the old town. You need to leave the old town, locate Nafsithea all day coffee bar, and walk northeast for about 30 minutes.

I spent a few days exploring Chania, with its charming old town and beautiful harbor. Walking the cobblestone streets felt like stepping back in time. Entry to most sites is free, but the Archaeological Museum costs around 6 euros, which is totally worth it to see the Minoan artifacts. One day, I visited Elafonissi Beach—absolutely breathtaking with its pink sand and turquoise waters! 🏝️ I also made a trip to the Samaria Gorge for some hiking. Located in Chania, Crete, Greece, it is a place with ancient and splendid civilization relics, the azure sea, as well as fertile valleys and steep gorges, like a small universe filled with charm and treasures, which requires a long time to fully explore. Designers seek inspiration from the 'rugged rocks' of Chania, bringing the simple and pure beauty of Chania's nature into the home. After a short rest, the team went to SUSES restaurant by the sea at Akti Tompazi for dinner under the leadership of Qi Wei, and then strolled around the Chania Lighthouse to enjoy the surrounding seascape and sunset beauty.

While cruising the Greek Islands, we visited a lot of beautiful places. One of my favorite places was the Island of Crete. Here we went for a wine tasting at the Anoskeli Winery, which was absolutely fantastic. The owner took us on a tour through the vineyards and the wine celler. Of course, the wine tasting at the end was my favorite part. The staff was just lovely and very attentive. The wine was really good as well. Botatical park & Gardens - Crete Island

One of the main, in my opinion, attractions of the island of Crete, which for some reason the guides almost never talk about, is the botanical garden. It is located in the region of Chania, on the 18th kilometer of the road Chania - Omalos on the mountainside. The garden is large - about 20 hectares, spread out on a mountainside in a place that was previously destroyed by fire. There are many types of plants in the garden, below there is a lake, a farm with donkeys and peacocks. The most pleasant thing is a walk along the paths of the garden - first you go down to the lake, then climb back - along the slopes of the hill along a winding path on the sides of which various types of plants are planted. Orange and lemon trees grow everywhere, there are many birds. At the end of the hike, you can have lunch in a restaurant with a beautiful view. Ancient Aptera - Crete Island, Greece

The ruins of the ancient town of Aptera, located about 13.5 km east of Chania, are spread over two hills that rise majestically above Souda Bay. Founded in the 7th century BC, Aptera was one of the most important town-states of western Crete and grew steadily until an earthquake destroyed it in the 7th century AD. In the 10th century, with the advent of Byzantium, Aptera was revived and became a bishopric. In the XII century, the monastery of John the Evangelist was founded here, and now its reconstructed building is the central attraction of this settlement. There is no public transport in Aptera. In the museum you can see various ship equipment, weapons, many exhibits explaining the structure of ships. In the museum you will find not only the history of the fleet, but also the history of Crete and Chania. The construction of cities, battles, political battles - all this is reflected in the museum's exposition. In general, in the museum you can get acquainted with the whole history of Crete. You will hardly find places where the historical charm and grandeur of Chania would be felt more strongly than in the Old Venetian Harbour. It is surrounded by pastel-coloured buildings that punctuate the labyrinth of narrow streets with their shops and taverns. On the east side, the domed Mosque of Kiutsuk Hasan stands out, now converted into an exhibition hall, and a few steps further east, the Center for Mediterranean Architecture is located in the magnificently restored Grand Arsenal. Samaria Gorge - Crete Island, Greece

This spectacular 18 km gorge is located within the Samaria National Park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List. The canyon starts from Xyloskalo near the mountain village of Omalos and descends 1250 meters down to the seaside village of Agia Roumeli. The Tarraios River flows through the gorge, which dries up almost completely in summer, but becomes quite full-flowing in winter. The rocky path that runs along the gorge is quite winding and is unlikely to be suitable for people in poor physical shape. On the busiest days, up to 3,000 people pass through the gorge. The walk can take four to six hours depending on your form. The gorge is open to visitors from May to mid-October. #bucketlistreboot #greece
