Whenever you visit a European city, you can't help but learn about the local tram system. The establishment of every country always includes transportation. Trams often represent the characteristics of that European city. The tram system in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia, dates back to the late 19th century. In 1885 the first electricity supply system for horse-drawn carriages was opened in Sarajevo. These carriages use electricity instead of traditional horse-drawn power. Early 20th century: The tram system was expanded and became one of the main modes of public transportation in the city. The tram network covers all important areas in the city. 1992–1995: During the Bosnian Civil War, the tram system was severely damaged and many tracks and facilities were destroyed. The above history has witnessed the development of the city, war and prosperity of the tram. This time when I came to this area, I wanted to share with you the colorful but somewhat old trams. It always has a hint of Eastern European communism. Sarajevo's tram system has three lines. Here is a brief description of each line: Line 1 (Tramvajska linija 1): This line is the main line of the Sarajevo tram system, connecting the Central Railway Station (Trg Austrije) in the city center to the Ilidža area. It passes by some major streets and landmarks, including the Velko Atrichi Sports Hall (Sportski centar Asim Ferhatović Hase) and the University of Sarajevo. Line 1 is the longest line, with a total length of approximately 9 kilometers. Line 3 (Tramvajska linija 3): This line connects the central railway station in the city centre with the district of Orašťnica (Otoka). It passes through some busy commercial and residential areas, including the Sarajevo National Theatre (Narodno pozorište Sarajevo) and the Sarajevo City Hall. Line 3 is approximately 6 kilometers long. Line 6 (Tramvajska linija 6): This line connects the central railway station in the city centre with the Bjelave district. Airport shuttle bus is available (5 EUR), but we ended up sharing a taxi with 2 other travelers for €7.5 per person (12.5 KM each). Day 1 – Old Town Highlights Sebil Fountain – Iconic wooden fountain, more symbolic than spectacular. Sacred Heart Cathedral – Beautiful stained glass & Sunday masses. Serbian Orthodox Cathedral – 19th-century church with classic architecture. Latin Bridge – Near the site where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated. Eternal Flame Monument – A WW2 memorial, usually lit (except on snowy days). Day 2 – Modern Views & Scenic Spots Avaz Twist Tower – Amazing 35th-floor city view, free entry; drinks available at regular prices (beer ~5 KM). Trebević Cable Car – Takes you up for panoramic views and a peaceful café break. (~20 KM roundtrip). War Museum 1992 – Small museum near the cable car. Interesting but not outstanding (10 KM entry). ⛪ Places We Missed (Due to Snow or Time) Tunnel of Hope – A must for history lovers; near the airport. Vrelo Bosne – Nature park, better suited for longer stays. White Fortress (Bijela Tabija) – Great views, especially at sunset.

"The air is trembling, as if the sky is burning." This classic line is like a key that opens the door to my longing for Sarajevo. The 1969 film "Walter Defends Sarajevo" is not just a movie, but a vivid memory of history that draws me across mountains and rivers to this mysterious land. Upon arriving in Sarajevo, the city's atmosphere immediately envelops me. It lacks the hustle and bustle of a big city, yet it is full of unique charm. Walking along the ancient streets, the cobblestones beneath my feet seem to tell stories of the past. The architectural styles along the street are diverse, with the elegance of the Ottoman Empire and traces of Austro-Hungarian rule. Different cultures collide and blend here, creating the unique allure of Sarajevo. I arrive at the Latin Bridge, a seemingly ordinary stone bridge that was the spark of World War I. In 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife were assassinated here, igniting the flames of the First World War. Standing on the bridge, I can almost see the tense and turbulent scenes of the past, and the weight of history is palpable. In the movie, Walter also engaged in fierce battles with the enemy near here. Today, the buildings by the bridge remain, but the smoke of war has long dissipated, leaving behind people's appreciation and longing for peace. Walking along the street, I see the iconic clock tower. In the movie, it witnessed countless thrilling moments. Today, it still chimes on time, as if reminding people not to forget those difficult and heroic years. The surrounding market is bustling, with people weaving through the stalls, selecting various unique handicrafts and delicacies. The vibrant atmosphere here contrasts sharply with the tense wartime atmosphere in the movie, yet it exudes a different kind of harmony. In Sarajevo, there is another must-see place - the Yellow Fortress. From here, the view of the entire city is breathtaking. The distant mountains undulate, and the city nestled in their embrace appears particularly tranquil. In the movie, the guerrillas fought fiercely with the enemy here, sacrificing their lives to defend their homeland. Today, the Yellow Fortress has become a popular spot for tourists to enjoy the scenery and experience history. Standing on the Yellow Fortress, I close my eyes, and scenes from the movie flash through my mind, filling me with admiration for those brave warriors. Because of a movie, I came to Sarajevo. Here, I see the intertwining of history and reality, and I feel the cruelty of war and the preciousness of peace. This city is not only a legendary place in the movie but also a place full of stories and emotions. It makes me understand that although history has passed, its traces will never disappear. It will inspire us to cherish our current lives and strive for peace and beauty.
