From there, I wandered through the Casco Viejo, Bilbao’s old town, full of charming narrow streets, historic buildings, and lively pintxos bars. I couldn’t resist trying a few pintxos with a glass of txakoli, the local sparkling white wine. A must-see is the Ribera Market, perfect for tasting Basque flavors. Later, I took the funicular to Mount Artxanda for a panoramic view of the city. Bilbao is very solo traveler-friendly—safe, compact, and with excellent public transport. Guernica is a city with a strong Basque culture, even within Spain. Beautiful red, green, and white flags can be seen here and there. Most of the city was destroyed in bombings during the Spanish Civil War, and many of the buildings were later rebuilt. The Basque Parliament is one of the few buildings that escaped the fire, and it features beautiful stained-glass windows with an oak tree motif. It is said to have originated from the time when the Declaration of Independence was made under an oak tree. The oak tree currently in the parliament building is several generations old, and the original is treasured nearby, surrounded by columns. The parliament building is still in use, formally, but the inside has been modernized, which surprised me! There are electronic voting buttons inside wooden boxes! There's also Picasso's Guernica mural, and although it's small, there's plenty to see! Olive oil and delicious wine are available at reasonable prices at the local supermarket.
