However, as transit becomes more convenient, Bahrain’s mysterious veil is gradually being lifted for Chinese tourists. Before the discovery of oil in the Middle East, pearls were the most important trade commodity in the region. When it comes to pearl production, quality, and trade volume, Bahrain ranks first, and it can be said without hesitation that Bahrain produced the world’s finest seawater pearls. Though small, Bahrain has a very long history, with pearl diving dating back more than 3,000 years. The pearl oyster requires very specific seawater conditions, and the northern part of Bahrain Island is rich in freshwater minerals, making it the best habitat for pearl oysters. Before oil was discovered in 1932, pearl diving was one of Bahrain’s most important industries. However, with the decline of pearl diving, the rise of oil, and the industrialization of pearl farming in Japan, pearl divers were pushed into the oil industry, ending this ancient and legendary trade that lasted for a millennium. Today, near the capital Manama on Muharraq Island, a 3.5-kilometer-long Pearl Road has been restored and renovated based on historical sites and old houses. The government has transformed it into a living ecological museum where visitors can feel the thousand-year history and hear the many legendary stories of pearl divers’ blood and tears. The “Pearl Road” starts at the Bu Maher Fort at the southern end of Muharraq Island and extends north to the Siyadi buildings. Along the way, there are 17 historical buildings related to the pearl industry, including the residences of pearl merchants like the Siyadi House, as well as pearl divers’ hospitals and dormitories. The visitor center features remarkable architecture that is a popular photo spot for tourists. This “Pearl Road” has also been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It became part of the Arab Empire in the 7th century, was occupied by the Portuguese from 1507 to 1602, became a British protectorate in 1880, declared independence on August 15, 1971, and changed its official name to the Kingdom of Bahrain in 2002. Bahrain was the first country in the Gulf region to extract oil, and its financial industry is a key sector, with nearly 400 global financial institutions having offices in Bahrain. The capital, Manama, was designated the Arab Capital of Culture by the Arab League in 2012. It is one of the most highly educated cities in the Middle East Gulf region. The local guide said it had been raining for the past two days, and today is the coldest day in Bahrain. Figures 1-6 show the Bahrain World Trade Center, located in downtown Manama. The twin towers stand 240 meters tall and were designed by Atkins Architects, inspired by traditional Arabic wind towers. Completed in 2008, it is the world’s first skyscraper to integrate a wind power system. Horizontal-axis wind turbines installed on three skybridges use the Venturi effect to increase wind speed, generating about 1,300 megawatt-hours annually, meeting part of the building’s electricity needs. The building’s facade uses solar glass, and a water pool at the entrance provides cooling, reflecting sustainable design concepts. The building won the 2006 UAE Green Leaf Award and the 2008 Best High-Rise Building Award for the MENA region. Figures 7-8 show the Four Seasons Hotel, a 260-meter-tall building that is one of the tallest skyscrapers in Manama, representing the luxury and scale of Bahrain’s modern hotel industry. Figures 9-10 show the Bahrain Financial Harbour twin towers, each 260 meters tall with 53 floors, completed in 2007, and an important part of Manama’s skyline. Figure 12 shows Manama’s Central Business District, home to Bahrain’s main financial institutions and multinational corporate headquarters, and one of the Gulf region’s key financial and business centers. The architectural style blends modern skyscraper design with traditional Arabic architectural elements. Figure 18 shows the Al Yateem Mosque in Manama, Bahrain. Figure 19 shows another mosque in Manama, Bahrain. Figure 20 shows the Wyndham Grand Manama, also known as the “Bahrain Twist Tower,” a highly recognizable modern landmark in Manama. The building twists 90 degrees, with a facade made up of 26,000 triangular glass panels creating a dynamic curved visual effect. It is one of the Middle East’s representative twisted buildings. The building’s inclined design set a related record, with a tilt angle of about 18 degrees—more than four times that of the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy—and is also known as one of the “world’s most tilted man-made towers.”
