Heaven Lake on Changbai Mountain, also known as Baekdu Mountain Heaven Lake, is located in the southeast of Jilin Province, China, and is a border lake between China and North Korea. It is located at the top of the volcanic cone of the main peak of Changbai Mountain and was formed by the accumulation of water in the crater after the volcanic eruption in 1702. It is slightly oval in shape.
The water surface of Heaven Lake is 2,189.1 meters above sea level, about 4,400 meters long from north to south, about 3,370 meters wide from east to west, with a water surface area of about 9.82 square kilometers, a total water storage capacity of 2.04 billion cubic meters, an average water depth of 204 meters, and a maximum depth of 373 meters. It has a temperate continental mountain climate, with long and cold winters, short and cool summers, and foggy spring and autumn.
Heaven Lake on Changbai Mountain is the deepest lake in China and the source of the Songhua River, Yalu River, and Tumen River. Its lake water is clear and transparent, colorless and tasteless, and has a low temperature. The lake is surrounded by 16 peaks, offering spectacular scenery.

Changbai Mountain - Infinite Natural Scenery
I used to only know that Changbai Mountain is famous for its ginseng, but I had no idea about the scenery there. It wasn't until a friend who grew up in Changchun introduced it to me that I learned about the many beautiful sights of Changbai Mountain. Today, I finally had the chance to visit the three northeastern provinces in mid-September, including a trip to Changbai Mountain. Before going, I read various materials and found out that Changbai Mountain has a southern slope, northern slope, and western slope. Initially, I wanted to choose the southern slope, but it was closed on certain days in early September, and the western slope requires climbing thousands of steps. Given my lack of experience, we opted for the more accessible northern slope. This time, I stayed on Changbai Mountain and could take the hotel's shuttle and VIP (express) lane to the northern slope, which was very convenient. However, staying on the mountain made it less convenient to go down to Erdaobaihe Town.
We were very fortunate with the weather and got to see the beautiful Tianchi Lake. However, to see Tianchi, you have to wait in line for about 30 minutes. Even though I went during the off-season, there were still many tourists, so you have to walk carefully. There's also a spot on the way to Tianchi where you can see North Korea. You need to pay close attention or ask the staff of Changbai Mountain because the signs are not very clear, and it's easy to miss. After that, we visited the Changbai Mountain Waterfall. To see the waterfall, you have to walk a bit on the mountain, but it's very special as there are hot springs on one side and the waterfall on the other. The hot spring water has a faint sulfur smell. Near the waterfall, there's a forest that's great for taking photos. After coming down from the waterfall, there's a place for snacks and drinks. We had hot spring boiled eggs, corn, and fried rice cakes. I had never seen fried rice cakes before; the texture was very unique. I also learned what 'gaga jiao' and 'gaga xiang' mean. Additionally, we visited the Starbucks on Changbai Mountain, but it was very crowded, with at least a 30-45 minute wait. If you're in a hurry, it's best to skip it.

The natural landscape around the hotel is amazing, with streams and snow scenes, like a painting. Here, the air is fresh, the environment is quiet, and it feels like a paradise. Although the transportation is a bit inconvenient and you need to book a car to travel, it didn't affect our mood.

In the evening, the hotel organized a bonfire party, which was warm and joyful. Everyone sat around the fire, sharing their stories, and the laughter was constant, which was very warm. In the tea room, it was a pleasure to taste tea while enjoying the beautiful view outside the window.

The No. 3 villa we booked has a very ideal view and location, especially in the early morning, the sun shines through the window into the room, and the scenery is picturesque. Although the hotel is a bit off the beaten path, the environment is beautiful and the natural landscape is rich, which is really fascinating.

Changbai Mountain has the North Slope, West Slope, and South Slope to choose from. The North Slope is more developed and you can see all the traditional sights there. The West Slope is more ecological, and the view of the Heavenly Lake is more expansive. It seems that fewer people go to the South Slope. I chose the more traditional North Slope on my first visit.
🎈About the attractions:
During the summer vacation, it's super crowded, and the attractions have a limit on the number of visitors. Once the limit is reached, ticket sales will stop, so it's strongly recommended to go early.
👉The ticket is 105 yuan, and the shuttle bus is 80 yuan.
🎈About the weather:
The weather on Changbai Mountain changes in the blink of an eye! If it's not raining, just a short-sleeved shirt with a light spring/autumn jacket will do. But if it starts to rain, it's a different story; even a light down jacket wouldn't be too much at the summit. However, there are down jackets for rent on the mountain, which I remember cost about 80 yuan each.
🎈About the routes:
There are two routes on the North Slope, Route A and Route B. It's recommended to start with Route B, which is less crowded, more scenic, and great for taking photos📷. If you can see the Heavenly Lake after walking Route B, you'll have a pretty comprehensive view. Then you can walk Route A with more confidence. Route A has more attractions than Route B, but they are quite similar, and it's extremely crowded. Personally, I prefer Route B for its tranquility!
🎈About the journey:
There are shuttle buses on the North Slope, so the walk isn't too long. But if you get motion sickness easily, be prepared with things like orange peels and motion sickness medicine, because the mountain roads can be quite winding. The altitude of Changbai Mountain is over 2000 meters, and there's hardly any altitude sickness, but some people might feel a bit dizzy. Attention!! Make sure to apply sunscreen! Sunscreen! Sunscreen! The UV rays are super strong! Be prepared if you're going in July or August! You can't use umbrellas on the mountain, so if it rains, bring a raincoat and a thick jacket.
🎈About taking photos:
It's recommended to wear light-colored, solid clothing, which goes well with the blue sky and blue water of the Heavenly Lake, making for great photos! Skirts are not recommended❌. Let me tell you a secret, I found an excellent spot for photos👉just below Route A. ✨Because it snowed for a few days when we went, the Tianchi was not open all the time. It is suggested that you can go to the North Slope Tianchi when you stay in Erdaobaihe Town.
🏔Erdaobaihe Town: From Wanda to Erdaobaihe by chartered car 💰200 yuan, basically all travel here is by taxi. The ticket we went to rafting was bought from the taxi driver. Some drivers reported high prices. The ticket price we finally bought should also be expensive. You can compare the prices for everyone. We deliberately stayed for a day to see if Tianchi could open. Later, the driver told us that as long as Tianchi snowed, it would basically have to wait for two or three days after the snow stopped to open.
🧥Dress: I wore a warm vest + down liner + thick warm underwear + sweater + big coat + warm pants + fur knee pads + knitted skirt + thick socks + snow boots + thick gloves for rafting and Xueling, with 6 warm babies on the upper body + 2 knee pads + 2 foot pads + 1 each for mobile phone and power bank + two in gloves. It's not cold when rafting, but it's still very cold in Xueling. You must bring a few more warm babies to replace them when you go out, and cover your ears and face!
🛶Magic World Rafting: We set off for rafting at 6 o'clock in the morning (one person ticket price: 💰100 yuan), the boat went down the water just when it was light, we took a lot of photos on the river bank, the whole journey took 1 hour and 40 minutes, the normal whole journey should be over in 1 hour, this rafting is relatively gentle, there will be no water flying into the boat, not so cold, about minus 20 degrees that day, but still did not see the rime, but it's already very beautiful🥰~
🗻Xueling: We went to Xueling after rafting (it is recommended that everyone raft in the morning + Xueling and then go directly to Yanji, so as not to detour, so these two itineraries can be put on the last day), Xueling ticket one person 💰68 yuan, horse-drawn cart one person 120 yuan directly to the A point of feeding reindeer, after feeding the reindeer, just walk down the mountain for about half an hour (feeding reindeer money 30 one).
