But that is exactly where its charm lies — The sounds of people, scooters, pizzerias, old alleys, and the sea with Vesuvius as a backdrop. 🇮🇹 It's a city that gives you the feeling: "This is truly Southern Italy."

For this trip, we really wanted to visit Capri, but instead of staying on the island, we decided to stay in Sorrento. We found more accommodation choices there and the prices were also more affordable than staying on Capri itself. It actually worked out really well because Sorrento is a lovely town on its own, and getting to Capri is very easy. You can take a ferry or high-speed ferry from Marina Piccola in Sorrento directly to Capri. The journey is quite short, usually around 20–30 minutes, with several departures during the summer. In 2026, a one-way ticket is roughly €21–26 per person depending on the ferry company and departure time. If you’re going during summer, I would recommend checking the latest schedule and booking your preferred morning ferry in advance. I’m actually really glad we stayed in Sorrento because the town itself is so cute. It sits high above the sea, with beautiful old buildings, little streets, restaurants and amazing views from the cliffs. So it didn’t feel like Sorrento was just somewhere we stayed before going to Capri at all. One of my favorite experiences in Capri was seeing the island from the sea. Since we were traveling as a group, we rented a small boat and drove it ourselves. They showed us how to use the boat and explained where we could go before we left. I remember being quite excited because it was something completely new for us! You can still find self-drive boat rentals around Capri today, although the rules depend on the boat and rental company, so I would recommend checking the latest requirements before booking. Seeing Capri from the water was probably one of the best parts of the trip. You can really see how dramatic the island is, with huge limestone cliffs rising straight out of the sea. The color of the water was also so beautiful. Farther out it was deep blue, but closer to the coast it changed into this really bright turquoise. Coming from Thailand, I found the Mediterranean Sea quite different from the tropical sea we are used to seeing back home. After exploring from the water, we went up towards Anacapri. If you have time, you can continue up to Monte Solaro, the highest point on Capri at 589 meters. The view from this side of the island is amazing. You can look down and see the white houses, little boats, the marina and that beautiful blue sea stretching out in front of you. Walking around Capri and Anacapri is also really nice. There are little streets, cafés, shops and lemons everywhere! 🍋 You’ll find lemon souvenirs, sweets, ceramics and all kinds of local lemon products around this part of Italy. If you want to visit Capri but don’t necessarily want to stay on the island, I think staying in Sorrento and doing Capri as a day trip is a really nice option. You get to experience two beautiful places in one trip, and if possible, I would definitely recommend seeing Capri both from the sea and from above.
