Jiangnan Water Town (VIII)

Jiangnan Water Town (VIII)

After a short rest in the afternoon, we officially stepped into the ancient town of Nanxun. It was only when we entered that we learned that by simply registering our fingerprints, we could re-enter the park at any time the next day. Upon entering the gate, we immediately immersed ourselves in the picturesque scene of small bridges over flowing water and households along the river. The small streets on both sides of the river feature both manor houses and distinctive shops, with several small bridges connecting the two streets. Strolling along the riverbank, one can easily visit several major attractions in the scenic area without deliberately searching. Sitting on the stone steps by the river, behind me, a black-awning boat would occasionally drift by, followed by moments where only the stone arch bridge and the glistening waves under the stone steps are left; the bluestone paths seem to narrate the noble and elegant past of Nanxun; standing on the stone arch bridge and looking down, the ancient houses on the side, the drooping green leaves, and the distant boats add a touch of vitality to the scene. Nanxun has a famous architectural complex called the Hundred Houses. The Hundred Houses were built during the Ming Dynasty and have a history of over four hundred years. It is the most well-preserved riverside residential building complex from the Ming and Qing dynasties in the Jiangnan area, with about a hundred houses that maintain the architectural style of the Ming Dynasty while also incorporating the charm of the Qing Dynasty. The buildings are erected along the river, winding along the waterway, and the delicate and transparent roll-up doors connect the entire Hundred Houses into a long arcade-style street. To get to the Hundred Houses, one must first cross a small road. Walking deeper into the streets, the shops become fewer, and a sense of desolation and vicissitudes arises. Suddenly, I found myself on the long street of the Hundred Houses complex. Here, the simplicity and naturalness, the sparse tourists, and the sight of the locals' simple ancient town life are so leisurely and comfortable. The red lanterns hung in front of each household form a beautiful scenery line, which, together with the building complex and small bridges, is reflected in the water, presenting a tranquil and beautiful scene that one is reluctant to disturb.

Huzhou is truly a romantic city~

Huzhou is truly a romantic city~

Weekend getaway from Yuyao for a day trip, Huzhou~ I heard that Huzhou is beautiful in March and April, so I wanted to experience it and bought an early high-speed train ticket. After getting off the train, I went to eat at Old Liang's dry pick, a big serving with a runny egg, paired with dry pick noodles, it was absolutely delicious. Adding fried pork rinds made it a bit greasy for me, my fault for being too greedy, wanting to try everything~ After the meal, I went to Fahua Temple, always like to visit the temples when I go to a city~ On the bus to Fahua Temple, I saw the cherry blossoms in Huzhou's green belt, the whole city was in bloom, a spring breeze blew by, and the petals fell, it was so beautiful~ Fahua Temple is not big, but because it's away from the bustling city, it feels especially serene, you can clearly hear the insects and birds on the mountain, just walking around and taking pictures. The Grand Hall was having a ceremony, listening to the monks chanting, I felt a lot more peaceful inside. In the afternoon, I went to the Fisherman's Wharf, because the weather was good, the Fisherman's Wharf was really too beautiful~ It's not an exaggeration to say it's the lake that most resembles the sea, the sky and water blending as one. You must take a speedboat at Fisherman's Wharf, 40 yuan per person, eight minutes of happiness, very worth it. At sunset, I went near Xinghai Mingcheng to take pictures of cherry blossoms with the Ferris wheel, and almost missed the return train while waiting for the Ferris wheel to light up. Huzhou is really a romantic city, the wind from Lake Tai, blowing down the cherry blossoms all over the city~

"Nanxun" Nanxun Old Town.

"Nanxun" Nanxun Old Town.

"Nanxun" Nanxun Old Town Visited Nanxun in nearly 40-degree heat. It was so hot! Nanxun is a great old town, but don't visit in such hot weather. It really affects the experience, and you won't feel like taking photos. Nanxun Old Town is free to enter, but some attractions inside charge separately. You can also buy a combo ticket. Xiaolianzhuang and Jiaye Library are CNY 25, Zhang Shiming's Former Residence is CNY 20, Zhang Jingjiang's Former Residence is CNY 20, Liu's Ladder Hall is CNY 10, and Yiyuan is CNY 10. We bought the CNY 80 combo ticket, which includes a CNY 50 voucher that can be used at designated stores. There are quite a few stores that accept it. I highly recommend this combo ticket with a voucher! I personally recommend Xiaolianzhuang, Zhang Shiming's Former Residence, and Yiyuan. Yiyuan is especially beautiful. It's like a hidden garden in the old town. I suggest entering from the south gate. The first attraction is Xiaolianzhuang. You can visit all the way through and exit from the east gate. We parked at parking lot 3 at the east gate, then took a taxi to the south gate for CNY 8. You can also take a boat. The water bus costs CNY 3 per person and runs every 30 minutes to the south gate. It's really worth taking, but we arrived late and couldn't get a ticket. I don't recommend taking the tricycles at the entrance. They cost CNY 10 per person. It's better to take a taxi to the south gate for CNY 8. Finally, I recommend the night cruise. It's CNY 30 per person and takes about 15–17 minutes. It starts after 5 pm. The night view is beautiful!

Xiaolian Villa: A Classical Garden

#favouriteitinerary Xiaolian Villa, built during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty, is a classical garden architecture. It was the private garden, family temple, and charitable estate of Liu Yong (courtesy name Guanjing), the wealthiest man in Nanxun. Liu named it "Xiaolian Villa" in admiration of Zhao Mengfu's Lotus Villa in Huzhou. The entrance fee is 25 yuan. Personal Opinion: Xiaolian Villa offers a serene and historic retreat, with its classical architecture and rich cultural heritage making it a noteworthy destination.

Why Huzhou is the Next Culture City of East Asia (Part 1)

Why Huzhou is the Next Culture City of East Asia (Part 1)

On September 12, 2024, the 15th China-Japan-Korea Ministerial Conference on Culture was held in Kyoto, Japan. At the conference, commemorative plaques for the 2025 "Culture City of East Asia" were awarded to China's Macao Special Administrative Region and Huzhou City in Zhejiang Province, Kamakura City in Japan, and Anseong City in South Korea. Huzhou became the 17th city in China to be named a "Culture City of East Asia." There are many cities in China named after lakes, such as Wuhu, a prefecture-level city in Anhui Province; Chaohu, which has been incorporated into Hefei in the same province; Honghu in Jingzhou, Hubei Province; and Hulunbuir in Inner Mongolia, named after two lakes. However, there is one city that is simply and purely named after a "lake." What's even more incredible is that the lake this city is named after doesn't actually belong to it. It's like the "borrowed scenery" in Chinese garden art: you can see the lake, but it doesn't belong to you. This city is called Huzhou, and the lake it is famous for is called Taihu Lake. Taihu Lake is the third largest freshwater lake in China and the most culturally significant and well-developed for tourism among the five major freshwater lakes. In Wuxi, there is a cliff carving at Yuantouzhu, known as the "First Scenic Spot of Taihu Lake," with the words "Encompassing Wu and Yue" inscribed by Liao Lun, a Qing Dynasty scholar who served as the local magistrate of Wuxi. This inscription highlights the historical and cultural significance of Taihu Lake in the Jiangsu and Zhejiang regions. Today, the shores of Taihu Lake are home to four cities: Huzhou in Zhejiang, and Suzhou, Wuxi, and Changzhou in Jiangsu. Although Huzhou is closer to Taihu Lake, most of the lake's surface is divided among the three cities of Suzhou, Wuxi, and Changzhou, leaving Huzhou with only a 50-meter-wide shoreline. The earliest administrative division named "Huzhou" can be traced back to the Sui Dynasty, and for over a thousand years, the names Wuxing and Huzhou alternated. Huzhou was named after its proximity to Taihu Lake and flourished because of it. As the birthplace of cultural treasures such as the "king of brushes" Huzhou brush, the "Rongji Huzhou silk" that won gold and silver awards at the World Industrial Exposition, and the tea culture led by the tea sage Lu Yu, Huzhou became a leader in the development of Jiangnan for over a thousand years. The Huzhou merchants, represented by silk merchants, rose to prominence in the late Qing Dynasty, participating in the development of Shanghai and profoundly influencing modern China's economy. Huzhou lost jurisdiction over the surface of Taihu Lake in the early days of liberation, with various explanations such as the suppression of bandits in Taihu Lake and the exchange of land between Jiangsu and Zhejiang. Whatever the reason, it is now a thing of the past. The people of Huzhou did not "sigh at the lake," but instead embraced the sentiment of "having traveled all over the beautiful land of Jiangnan, one should only live in Huzhou." Among the many cities in Jiangnan, Huzhou may not be the most famous or economically advanced, but it remains one of the most livable cities and a popular tourist destination in southern Jiangsu and northern Zhejiang. Its top tourist attractions include Nanxun Ancient Town, Mogan Mountain, and Anji Bamboo Sea, located in its two districts and three counties.

Nanxun: A Night of Timeless Beauty

#chinatrip #nanxun #huzhou #jiangnan The night view at Nanxun is simply unparalleled, offering an authentic charm rarely found in other Jiangnan water towns. As the lanterns along the riverside lit up, their reflections danced on the tranquil water, creating a mesmerizing scene. We chose a cozy local riverside restaurant for dinner, savoring traditional dishes and sipping tea while soaking in the serene beauty of this untouched and ticket-free water town. The soft glow of the lights, the gentle ripple of the water, and the quiet hum of the evening made the experience unforgettable. Nanxun at night felt like stepping into a living painting of Jiangnan’s timeless allure.

Huzhou's resort hotels are on another level - it's like a whole ancient town.

Huzhou's resort hotels are on another level - it's like a whole ancient town.

▫️Environment▫️ The hotel is located in Xishanyang Wetland Park. Bridges, flowing water, pavilions, and towers - the scenery changes with every step. 🏯 We stayed in a courtyard room. Entering through a quaint door, there are two rooms. When you open the door, it's like you've traveled back in time to the courtyard of a wealthy family. The room numbers are also full of ancient charm. Zhizao Courtyard, Zhilu Courtyard, and so on. It was drizzling on the day we checked in. 🌧️ I was a little annoyed at first. But I didn't expect the scenery in the rain to be so beautiful. Sitting in the room, watching the drizzle fall on the autumn leaves on the terrace, I felt very healed. Because of the rain, a thin layer of mist covered the river. 🌫️ The whole hotel was like a fairyland. ▫️Dining▫️ We ate at the hotel's Jinxiu Restaurant. We enjoyed a winter warm pot with fish maw and chicken. 🐔 It was delicious, and a sip of the soup warmed me up. The wild river shrimp was so fresh. In addition to Jinxiu, there are many restaurants in the scenic area. You must try Huzhou's old brand of soup dumplings and wontons! There's also Western food at Duoduo Flower House. The hotel's breakfast is in the form of Cantonese dim sum. It's very ceremonial. There's also free 🆓 goodnight sweet soup. The chestnut 🌰 and sweet potato soup is delicious! ▫️Entertainment▫️ There are so many activities in Xishanyang Scenic Area. It takes a whole day just to visit the wetland park. You can also go to the service center. 👇🏻 ✔️🆓 Free bike rental 🚲 ✔️🆓 Free fishing rod rental 🎣 ✔️Free 🆓 Hanfu rental for travel photos 📸 ✔️Various DIY activities (plant printing, sachet making, etc.) ✔️Children's playground ✔️Feed alpacas 🦙 and black swans 🦢 ...... Three days and two nights don't feel like enough. PS: Pet 🐶 friendly. 📍Huzhou Zhenyin Jinxiu Resort Hotel
