Satis House Hotel

Nice hotel, just needs a few updates.

We booked online and paid for an early check in. When we arrived there was nobody around except someone gardening near the front who said nothing. Went to the reception desk and someone finally came to meet us. The greeting was basic and laconic. The reception, stairs and corridor to our room smelt strongly of some chemical or other. Our room was immaculate and old fashioned which would have been fine but the bathroom was not great and the “balcony” had a dead plant and was actually just the portico over the front door. Decoration has been kindly called “eclectic” e.g. stuffed animal heads on the wall with their tails. The dining room menu looked basic. We have never left a hotel and especially not so quickly but we both felt very uncomfortable. When we left, again there was nobody around except 2 people in the garden who said they were the owners. We handed back the key but made it clear we would not ask for our money back. There was minimal reaction from the owners, no questions, no look of surprise etc. We booked another hotel about an hour away and they said the Satis once had a good reputation. It was sad to see a once lovely home looking less than at its best and I’m sorry that it’s struggling. I was unsure whether to review a hotel where we stayed for such a short time but can see others have been less than happy too so perhaps our experience was not unique.

On arrival at the hotel (late afternoon) no one was at reception, and no bell to call someone. It was cold and dingy. There was no proper lighting. The room was not heated (in November!). There were two small electric panel heaters in the room - and one did not work. The heater in the bathroom (small electric heater up on the wall) did not work either. No one seems to have checked the functioning of the heaters.

Only stayed one night but nice room, great beakfast

Disappointing! The property was obviously a lovely in it’s day, however it is very tired now and really needs a refurbishment. Our room was tired, dusty and smelt of damp, however the bedding was clean and fresh. We was woken at 6am with dogs constantly barking in a building next to our room. The only person we saw was a young man, who checked us in upon arrival, served us drinks in the bar and then waited on us in the restaurant for dinner. The food was not a good quality either and was not value for money. The next morning at breakfast it was the same young man that waited on us. He then went on to check us out on our departure. I feel this poor chap deserves a helping hand !

Weekend break Faded glory. Comfortable and spacious room but could have been cleaner. Shower in bath should have been made safer with grab handles.
