In July, my friend and I spent a full day at the Caucasus Wildlife Refuge, about 1.5 hours drive from Yerevan. The main center and lodge is location in the desert mountains at 1,250m above sea level. We were greeted by 2 nice ladies who worked there and was served a delicious brunch, with vegetarian options available. Our jeep tour into the reserve was scheduled to start in the afternoon. While waiting, we spent a couple of hours walking around the area checking out the brown bears and horses, and then in the pool surrounded by amazing views of the mountains to cool off in the hot summer weather. Wifi is provided with very good connectivity. At 3pm, our guide and driver promptly arrived to start our jeep tour and I was so excited! On the way, he bought us ice cream and water. As we veered off from the main road into the mountains, we started climbing the dirt road, it was a real adventure and the views were nothing short of breathtaking.. we made a few stops to take in the landscape and finally after about an hour, we reached the top at about 2,300m elevation. We took a walk, it was very windy and pleasant but still hot nonetheless! On the way down, we stopped at a local family’s house who kindly offered us some snacks, fruits and coffee.. four generations of the family was there, who come to live in the mountains from May to October. They had chickens, horses, cows, dogs and rabbits, and also a superbly glorious vegetable farm that grows cucumber, tomato, pepper, chilli, basil, beans and melons to name a few. They also had a water source from the mountains which they divert to their house, for the animals and also the farm. There were also ruins from a really old village nearby, with Kachkars dating back to the 12th century. It was incredible and truly the highlight of the tour. Alas after almost an hour, it was time to leave, we bid our goodbyes to the sweet family and started our way back to the lodge through a different route down the mountains, which took about an hour. We spent the rest of the day back in the pool, enjoying the sunset and again, a scrumptious dinner. At night, the weather and blowing wind was extremely pleasant and peaceful, which we enjoyed watching the moon and stars, a perfect ending to a wonderful day.

I really felt I was in the real Armenian wilderness. I felt so privileged to be taken into such beauty. The staff were awesome. The ethos so good, they buy food from the local area pay the staff well. They are re-foresting the area. Well done all involved!

I arrived here without knowing the project of this place: to protect the wild life of this area. I was enchanted by the commitment to preserve this pristine and wonderful part of Armenia. Beside that, the hospitality was warm, the staff always gentle and an exquisite, amazing,manager, Ella. Beyond any expectation 😊

Ciao a tutti, ho il piacere di condividere la mia esperienza in Caucasus Wildlife Refuge. Questa tappa non era in programma e, come spesso accade, sono i "fuori programma" le esperienze piu' memorabili di un viaggio. E' un esperienza per chi ha amore e rispetto per la natura e tradizioni locali. Per chi è capace di apprezzare il silenzio, il cibo (ECCEZIONALE....se rimanevo piu' tempo mi sarei preso qualche chilo) e l'ospitalità. Ci sono tutti i confort per un viaggio, alloggi pulitissimi, piscina, WIFI. Ho soggiornato una sola notte ma sarei rimasto qua molto di piu'. Appena arrivato ho esplorato i paesaggi e "curiosato" tra gli animali protetti (non avevo mai visto un orso!!!). Pomeriggio ho fatto un'escursione di 3 ore in Jeep.....FANTASTICA. Ci siamo fermati in alcuni punti panoramici ed abbiamo preso un caffè da una famiglia bellissima che vive in queste fantastiche montagne. Non si parla troppo inglese....ma va bene cosi. Ci si capisce e quel che conta (almeno per me) va oltre la spiegazione di un luogo ma sono le sensazione e l'emozioni che ti lascia un'esperienza di questo tipo. La sera, beh, immaginatevi il paesaggio (io carico qualche foto ma non rendono). Ho accompagnato il paesaggio con un bicchiere di vino ed ore di riflessione e meditazione. Ripensadoci, non era un bicchiere ma era mezza bottiglia :-). Per gli italiani....il vino armeno è davvero buono!! In merito al rifugio, di seguito alcuni dettagli e curiosità. Situato a circa 1h30min da Yerevan (potete chiedere a loro di organizzarvi il transfer o farlo in autonomia), questo rifugio, il primo del suo genere nel Caucaso Meridionale, è una testimonianza dell'impegno verso la conservazione della flora e della fauna del paese. Con un'estensione di circa 30.000 ettari, il Caucasus Wildlife Refuge si occupa della gestione del rifugio, mettendo in atto un piano innovativo per la conservazione della biodiversità dell'Armenia. Non si limita solo alla conservazione della fauna e della flora, ma coinvolge attivamente le comunità locali. Il supporto dei residenti delle comunità circostanti è fondamentale per il successo del rifugio. Il coinvolgimento dei locali ha portato all'apertura di posti di lavoro permanenti e stagionali nelle comunità, allo sviluppo dell'ecoturismo e alla promozione di piccole e medie imprese.
