Shibu Onsen KOKUYA
4.6/549 Reviews
From the moment you enter Kokuya Ryokan, be prepared to leave the real world behind and fully immerse yourself in the experience. You swap your shoes for slippers at the door and don’t see them again until you leave. You will receive a warm welcome from polite and gentle-mannered staff, get taken up to your beautiful room, and once you’ve changed into your traditional yukata, it’s time to let the relaxation begin. The multi-course dinner will probably be one of the best meals you’ve had in your life, with many unusual textures and flavors to try. The futons are comfortable, and your room is kept toasty warm. There are even skincare products to keep you pampered and moisturized between soaks in the onsen. Honestly, you won’t even need to open your suitcase while you’re there. The staff will take you through all the logistics when you arrive, but there are some things that might be useful to know in advance. - The ryokan sends a shuttle to Yudanaka station at about 15:00 to collect new arrivals, so time your journey to take advantage of this benefit. - The ryokan also offers guests the opportunity to catch a shuttle to the Snow Monkey Park immediately after breakfast the next morning. - After you leave the ryokan, they will take your luggage down to the coffee shop opposite the station, so you don’t need to worry about those logistics. - Trains from Yudanaka back to Nagano leave at 12:30 and 15:30. - The ryokan itself has several private onsens that you can reserve for a 45-minute slot. Because the onsens are on the property, you can go in with your partner or travel companions regardless of gender. It’s a boutique hotel, so you don’t have to worry about not getting access to all the onsens you want. - The ryokan is on the main road of the Shibu Onsen town. The hotel will give you a key so you can wonder down the main road, visiting any of the public onsens you wish - however, with so many gorgeous and more private onsens in the hotel itself, you probably won’t have time or the desire for this. - Also, there is a coffee machine in the room! (I was worried about having to survive without coffee, and this turned out to be an unfounded concern). We had an incredible and totally indulgent time at Kokuya. Experiencing a traditional ryokan is a privilege that you should try at least once if you can. And adding the Snow Monkeys in give the trip a double purpose, making it that much more memorable. The only thing that would have made the trip better is if we had been allowed to linger longer over every course of our dinner.

⭐Geographical location: Yudanaka Hot Spring is relatively close to Jigokudani Monuen, a 20-minute walk from the station. It should be noted that you can pick up the station before 5 pm. We arrived at 5:30, but the boss said we could not pick up. Although the distance is not long, it still takes a while to walk on the mountain road. You can also take a bus, which runs every half an hour. ⭐Service: There are two shopkeepers serving you, and their attitude is very good. They will help you deliver your luggage to the coffee shop next to the station when you travel the next day. It should be noted that if you check in after 3 pm, you will not be able to make calls in the morning. I left something in the room. No one answered the phone after three calls. In the end, I had to go to the store to get it again. ⭐Facilities: The room layout is relatively simple and the facilities are relatively simple. To be honest, the heating is relatively small and it is a bit cold at night. There is no shower room and toilet, and the sink only has cold water. Shower rooms and hot springs need to be charged separately, 500 yen. Public toilets (all small Japanese-style hotels are like this) are very clean, because there are few rooms and few guests, and you have never touched anyone else in the toilet. Anyway, the price/performance ratio is pretty good. ⭐Meals: Our order included dinner and breakfast, but the portions were small and not enough to fill us up. When we got out of the station, we had to remember to buy some food from Lawson. There are no convenience stores in the hot spring street! Mineral water is not provided, and there is an additional charge of +100yen. ⭐Hot spring: You can soak in 9 soups on the street, but there is only one key, so you have to go there separately. The private soup shop in the store is in B1. It is relatively simple, has a lot of moisture, and is not very clean. It is recommended to go to the public soup house. Although the boss said that there is no place to take a bath in the public bath, so you can only buy a private bath + shower, which is a bit embarrassing.

Likes the breakfast, room was huge. Great if you’re skiing or snowboarding at Ryu. However, hotel does not have parking, requires snowmobile to shuttle up and down or sometimes climb the hill if the shuttle is not available. Overall, I would visit again only if I’m skiing there.

Because we wanted to watch the fireworks festival and experience the hot springs, we booked a room here. We were greeted by a grandfather. It was a little late and raining when we arrived at Yudanaka. The grandfather came to pick us up. It was very comfortable to soak in the hot springs. Yudanaka should not be the peak tourist season. Maybe we arrived too late and left too early. The road was very deserted and there were not many people.

Negative review: The main entrance is a bit difficult to find, there is a small slant road, and it is a bit hard to drag luggage in the snow. Basic equipment is provided overall, the family room has a large space, but the number is small, please book early. The equipment is not friendly to the lady, not like other hotels, please prepare more personal items, the hair dryer also please borrow at the front desk, the wind sip of the hair dryer is broken and repaired with an instant binder, can you know that the high temperature will release harmful substances? There is a humidifier in the public position to take it for self-use, but it is either moldy or leaking. The hot springs are very general. There is a problem with the water in the bathing location of the large bath. It is almost the water to the hot spring water. I told the staff that he said that it was none of his business. He did not find other people to follow up. Finally, he told another female staff that the situation had improved. It is that some clerks (I don't know if they are staff or boss) are not helpful, we need to go to other hotels to ask traffic problems. No snow roll discount. Dinner is definitely not recommended, we would rather take the cold for 15 minutes to the Yizhiyi District, where it can be several times cheaper and several times the quality! The whole is inhumane! Positive review: The location of the stove in the lobby is very warm, you can grill the spongy candy and keep warm. There is an elevator to B/F, there is changing room store room locker and so on. There are ski equipment rentals, and the ski quality is good. The breakfast was good, the staff in the restaurant were very good, courteous, and they didn't do their best to help. The snow outside the window is good. Meeting other staff at the front desk is also very helpful, I believe it is a problem for others. Diagonally opposite is the Nagano bus station, Chair Lift and ticket office. But we will not stay in this hotel again, please reflect on the manager/boss!
