The Fownes Hotel was once a glove factory, and made fashionable gloves and gloves for the military etc. fascinating history. It has 61 bedrooms, but very little staff. Our twin room was clean and comfortable. Although the beds and pillows were hard for me. Tea and coffee making in room. T.V as well. pretty standard. As I am disabled the walk in shower was a boon, BUT it didn't have grab handles, nor a non slip floor. Shame, There were none of the perks of staying in an Hotel either you know, shampoo, proper soap, shower caps tissues, things like that. Breakfast was OK, plenty of it, but the chef needs to have more staff. Only one waiter and the tables were not laid, it was a buffet breakfast, which I loathe anyway. But as I say, the staff were excellent, so happy to help, and always a smile. I do have one serious complaint, the car park, there were two Disabled spaces, not a lot of room in them, just about squeeze two cars in. I had to pay £10 per night, even though I displayed a blue badge, which does enable me to park free at most places. I could have had parking around the corner for £3.50 per day. I did ask if I could be excused from this payment, but the car park is controlled by another company. I am annoyed that I had to pay £30 for the privilege of parking my car in there. They did assure me there were security guards walking about at night time., But to be honest I never saw or heard of one. Would I stay there again? Yes. It's a pity it hasn't more money to be spent on it to upgrade it, and have a lot more staff. It is very handy to get into town, 2minutes walk and you are in the centre which is delightful.
