Property Description
For the explorers, the food lovers and the do it differently-ers. From the outside, Lainston House is a beautiful, Queen Anne red brick hotel with 63 acres of gorgeous grounds in Winchester, Hampshire. But this isn’t your average country house estate. Here you’ll find adventure round every corner, from our walled garden hosting cookery classes and extraordinary events, to walking trails and world-renowned fly fishing in the Test Valley. Redefining country house hotel stays, we invite you to bring your wildest dreams so we can help you tick them off your bucket list.
One thing about adventures is they tend to work up a hefty appetite, so it’s fortunate that Lainston House is full of opportunities for feasting. The Avenue restaurant, named after the stunning avenue of lime trees leading up to the house, serves up a tantalizing tasting menu with a BBC MasterChef: The Professionals champion at the helm.
Meanwhile, The Wellhouse is one of the only UK restaurants where every dish is cooked by woodfire. Its historic, rustic-luxe atmosphere and deep, smoky flavors make for a truly unforgettable dining experience. Oh and if that wasn't enough to whet your appetite, you can get adventurous with your culinary skills too at Season cookery school.
Perfectly located in the heart of Hampshire just 10 minutes from the center of Winchester, Lainston House makes a great base for walking or cycling the South Downs Way, visiting Goodwood, Broadlands, Carfest and also staying the night before you head to Southampton to join your cruise.

Lainston House is beautiful! But I'd say the best part of my stay (apart from the great food) was the staff, always so friendly and genuinely happy to see and talk to you in more depth than often expected! Gerry was always a warm and welcoming face, so enthusiastic and lovely to chat to. The Lady who ran breakfast was also very, very nice (I'm not sure of her name). Thank you to all the staff for a lovely time.

I felt compelled to write this review having been invited to enjoy lunch in the grounds of this handsome hotel and which sadly failed my expectations of an enjoyable experience. While we were warmly welcomed by the waiter and I agree the pleasant surroundings held our attention for a time as we waited for our lunch the delay became a major problem. The first course and wine which we had requested took forever to arrive. The mains, a very lukewarm risotto and quite expensive for the meagre portion were similarly delayed. The bread was forgotten and only arrived well after we had finished and after I had prompted reception. We were later charged for the bread!. The waiter was very apologetic about the delay between courses, surprising since there were no other people dining at the time. They deleted the service charge but summing up the lunch delays marred what should have been a really special occasion . A great pity.

Stunning location. only downside is that we were only staying for one night! great service, beautiful terrace and long walks straight from the property. Food was great and the ambiance relaxed and friendly. the service was polished and professional

I went as a couple with my husband for 2 nights. We had fond memories from years ago staying at the hotel. During our stay we were unable to use the lounge in the daytime as it was reserved for corporate clients, every time we went to use it there was a Reserved sign and the lounge was set up for an event. We then tried to use the bar instead (which is a small library type of room). In this room the hotel staff were selling wedding packages etc to customers, speaking very loudly, so again no peace to sit and relax or have a drink. As it was a sunny during our stay we decided to try and sit outside for some peace and to have family guests join us for lunch. However, there was a corporate barbecue taking place. So during our stay as private guests we had nowhere to sit other than our room or outside in the garden. We had asked some of our family to join us for a light lunch on the Monday, but as the lounge was occupied and the bar busy we sat outside. I do not know where we could have gone at the hotel if the weather had not been good. Apart from no use of the public rooms during the daytime, the general decor was dated and rather shabby, the ladies toilets for the restaurant did not flush properly (I mentioned this to a member of staff) and there was dust in many areas of the hotel. Even in the dining room dust was visible to the naked eye on the wood panelling - as my husband looked at me from his side of the table to where I was sitting he could see dust behind me. The one positive from the stay is that the staff were all polite and helpful. A very disappointing experience and we will not be staying again or recommending this hotel to friends or family. It might be wonderful for corporate clients or wedding parties, by as individuals the hotel did not cater for us.

Booked a lovely room for my daughter’s wedding night. The room looked lovely but was soooo hot. Turns out no A/C. A 5 star hotel with a room at 26+ degrees. Windows open onto airless courtyard. Weak Ceiling fan above a covered 4 poster bed. Not helpful. What a disappointment

We had a one night stay here in July 2025, in the Garden Suite room. This was excellent, large with a comfortable bed, separate lounge and a big bathroom with a huge walk in shower. The hotel itself is large, set in huge grounds. I measured the WiFi at a very racy 170 Mbps download and 104 Mbps upload, which is superb. Breakfast was excellent, made to order. The croissants were unusually good. The staff that I encountered were friendly and helpful. Lainston House was not a cheap place to stay, but it was very good.

We've recently moved to Sparsholt and so decided to go to Lainston House for a drink to celebrate my wife's birthday. We walked round to the terrace where there were 4-5 tables full of empty glasses, bottles and dirty plates. Nobody came out to great us so after 10 mins I went in to the bar. I asked the waitress whether she could clear the tables. She looked at me blankly. Nothing happened. 10 minutes later I went into the hotel and asked someone else to clear the tables. Nothing happened. Eventually 30 minutes later they were cleared. We ordered cocktails (£19 for a margherita) - they were foul! With the catchment area of Winchester, Lainston House has the opportunity to fly, but most people head to Limewood Hotel in the New Forest....with good reason. Simon
