Sadly, despite an amazing location this YHA is very tired and needs significant investment. We have stayed at several hostels in the past as a family and this one fell well below our expectations. The decor was very sparse and most rooms suffered from areas of peeling paint and poor lighting. Often the lounge areas are cosy and somewhere to enjoy spending time but even these were bare with limited seating and the board games on offer were all incomplete. The self catering dining room felt like we were eating in prison with high windows, nothing on the walls, white peeling paint and a single light bulb "lighting" the room. The kitchen was acceptable but had fairly limited utensil selection. The other key thing to note, which isn't mentioned on the website or welcome email, is the steep and narrow access road. Whilst some may be comfortable driving this path it is definitely worth being aware of! The bedrooms were a standard YHA offering with bunk beds and a basin, fairly comfy and very quiet. We appreciated the canoe launch point which allowed direct access to the river from the property which was great. Sadly, overall, we were really disappointed with our stay and actually left one day early as couldn't face another day/evening in the property.

Came here for a one night stay after walking Sugar Loaf with my daughter in the day. I'll get this bit out of the way first. The drive down the path is not great. It's in a poor condition and from what I could see having checked in someone's wheel had been damaged needing a repair van to fix it blocking the path off. Luckily apart from a bang underneath my car survived both entry and exit. Now onto the hostel . The staff are really good. Very friendly, you felt that cared about your day and your stay. It was good chatting with the lad on reception about mine and my daughter's stamps from the hostels we've been to. Food was of good quality, both evening meals and breakfast, and great value with my daughter's being a £1 for each meal. Drying room is small and a bit of TLC is needed throughout but we were warm and comfortable in our room. Now the setting. On the bank of the river Wye it has great views and moorings if you were to paddle your way to the hostel. Lots of camping space at the bottom and a lovely old church which is sadly not accessible. All in all a good trip but I'd need the path improved before we visited again.

Stayed in a bell tent. Comfy beds, spacious tent in a beautiful setting by the river. Tent had a (slightly muted) light and a nice picnic table and fire pit outside. It's a bit of a walk up to the showers and broader facilities like the kitchen, but it was all v well done. The only reason I haven't given it 5* is that I'm not really a camping fan! Next time I'll aim to stay in a room. Oh, and you access the site down a bumpy single track road with steep edges. Not the most comfortable ride but we survived!

A fantastic site! The rough road down made me worried what I would find at the end but worth it. I was camping in the large field with river flowing close by, some arrived by canoe, lovely old building with all facilities, the cooked breakfast was great and staff very helpful. Self catering kitchen had all the facilities, could get busy and inevitably got chatting. Yes I'll go back again, views over the valley on a misty morning unbelievable.

I stayed here for one night and it was the most stunning location within the Wye Valley, the river is right outside and it is lush green in all directions. I would 100% recommend although note, the drive is pot holed and single tracked so just bear that in mind. Staff were super helpful and lovely. There was a lot of up and downs and the layout was not straight forward - theings seemed to be centered around the central self catering court yar not a super negative, just a comment/

YHA Wye Valley has spectacular views and location. The access road is terrible, very narrow, full of bumps and holes, scrapping the underside of the car unavoidable! The hostel feels a bit run down. The carpet in our room was quite stained and had a bit of damp smell. The self catering kitchen as equipped but not enough utensils, plates etc. There were cobwebs and dirt in parts, but this is also a campsite so it will be muddy and dirty. The House martins were busy with their nests and that was beautiful! Staff were very friendly, polite and helfpul :)

This YH takes me back and reminds me of why I love YHA so much. Great waterside location, although tricky drive down if you are arriving by road (nothing Bryan and his team arent aware of and working to remedy). Beautiful house with a small traditional church nect door. Camping bell tents and land pods must be set in one of the nicest locations in the YHA family. The rooms probably need a refresh. Self catering facilities are good and the dining room was fine. Can only talk about the Traditional Breakfast that was great. Above all what makes any place is the warm welcome received from the staff. All lovely but a special shout out to Bryan who had loads of information to draw on together with his own hand sketched map! Thanks for that mate. We will definitely be back

This is the youth hostel to remind you what staying with YHA is all about, great vibe, comfortable rooms living space and facilities in a lovely rustic building set in a spectacular landscape on the banks of the beautiful river Wye. If you know YHA hostels you'll love this one and if you've not tried them then this is a great place to start

We stayed in one of the bell tents which are situated in a spacious green area by the river. Inside the tent there’s plenty of space for 5 beds, with bedding supplied, and nice log burner, with fuel included. There are fire pits (can buy wood) and picnic tables for use outside each tent. Portacabin toilets and drinking water nearby. You can use all the facilities of the youth hostel a 5 min walk away: hot showers, toilets, tv room, self catering kitchen and drying room. They serve a delicious full English breakfast or continental breakfast, and do evening meals too. Bryan who runs the place is very helpful and I would definitely recommend saying here. There are lots of walks you can do from here and if you have your own canoe you can access the river from the campsite. Warning - the road through the forest to get onto the site is very steep and narrow, with sharp bends and lots of potholes!
