We had afternoon tea at The George today and I would have given it a higher rating but there was an issue with dietary needs. On booking we stated that I wasn’t able to have cheese, egg or white bread (I have a high intolerance and become unwell very quickly) they wrote this down. We then had to rearrange the date and they repeated the dietary needs unprompted. Upon delivering the food to the table I was surprised to see cheese and pickle alongside ham and tuna sandwiches. There was one person serving and it took a while to get her attention, when we pointed out the error she apologised and blamed it on reception who hadn’t passed this info on and informed us that it said against our booking no fish. Either way the dietary needs were not taken into consideration (we were given cheese that I can’t eat and tuna which they said was on the dietary to not be served) I was going to leave it as someone else could have eaten the cheese sandwich but had it pointed out that for others this could have been very serious if dietary requirements are not followed. On the plus side the food was delicious and very generous in a nice setting. One oddity is that it was tea for 2 but 9 miniature deserts! It would be nice to have a little card or list of what the deserts are especially with the earlier errors with dietary needs, some places do this some don’t.

I recently attended the George hotel for a friends 90th birthday afternoon tea. The sandwiches were very tasty with a good choice of fillings, and the sweet treats were very dainty with something to please everyone. Angela and her staff provided excellent service as well.

Can highly recommend Afternoon Tea. Celebrated a friend's birthday party here at The George. Everything was great, presentation, food, staff and round tables that facilitated good conversations and great laughs with all fellow guests. I recently also attended a charity dinner dance here and it was to the same high standard. Brilliant!

Two days ago I celebrated my 90th birthday with a wonderful tea party for 40 people. It was amazingly well arranged by the staff, entirely fitting all of my wishes and much beyond. Beautiful table linen, bone china tea-cups and saucers, amazing sandwiches, scones and other goodies as well as a non stop supply of tea and coffee and drinks for the Toast. Every guest thoroughly enjoyed it and my family greatly appreciated the care shown by Angela, and her team of wonderful staff. I would recommend it highly for any similar occasion or event.

I was at the same birthday tea as the previous reviewer and the hotel did a really good job. The room was beautifully set up and the staff were very helpful (the tea pots were pretty small so they had to keep coming back and forth with refills as attendees at a 90th birthday do like their tea!). The sandwiches were very fresh and the range of food was very good. Venue is good as the function room is right by the main entrance and the loos so very little walking needed.

I attended a 90th birthday celebration afternoon tea yesterday at The George Hotel & it was excellent. The room was set out beautifully with lovely crockery & pretty flower arrangements. There were plenty of delicious sandwiches, yummy scones & cakes. Angela, the event manager was very organised, personable & fun. I highly recommend!

I was going to let this bad experience pass but I now feel compelled to share my review. First of all, I spent over 1000 nights here between 2011-2022 for business trips. I came to Wallingford a few times after that but stayed elsewhere. We had stopped staying at the George due to a series of bad experiences. I decided to give it another try and came for 21 nights this month and I can say I won't be coming back and will recommend against it to my coworkers. The only pro for this hotel is the location because there is Waitrose and a wide variety of restaurants that are walking distance, and it is close to Benson Now the cons: - Poor customer service: the agreed rate was 110 pounds/ night without breakfast. Somehow I was charged 125/ night (with breakfast - which I did not take because I thought it was without and I did not want it was working on a late shift). I noticed the error only on my departure. I should have doubled checked right away at the moment that I paid (on arrival) so that is partly my fault. But it feels like I have been tricked because the lady said 110/night and then goes on discretely charging me 2625 two mimutes later ( in advance instead of 2310). I only realized when I saw the detailed statement at checkout. The young lady at the counter was totally uninteressed when I objected. - Checkin is at 14h00 which I understand but usually the hotel staff will make an effort to get the room ready as soon as possible if you are early. But not here... I arrived at 09h00 am. The hotel was far from full that day. The lady told me to come back after 14h00. I had nowhere to go and was very tired so I sat in the lobby and they had me wait until 14h15. My room was the last one to be cleaned because it was the one at the end of the corridor. The wait does not matter because I was early. However in any other hotel they would make an effort to get your room ready firstseeing thqt you have arrived. Parking: the parking is free but the parking spaces are very small. Good thing it was low season. But I knew this already. Just letting you know. Water pressure is very low and the water temperature is dificult to control. If you do come here make sure to get a room in the newer section (rooms 101-109, 201-209 or third floor). You need to be willing to shower iwith water that is either slighly too warm or too cold. The rooms are okay but nothing impressive. Don't expect to be impressed with the rooms. I come here only to sleep. I could go on but those are the main issues for me with the first one being the showstopper.
